What is the best setup ? A trailer with a pintle hitch or one with a hitch ball for towing .

A gooseneck is the best.

All have their uses. I have a pintle on my equipment trailer because it's easier to hook on, has more flex than a ball and very easy to move around the yard without having to get off my tractor.

For me it's a ball. Too much rattle and slop in a pintle.
Each has its place though.

What are you hauling? what are you hauling with? Do you need a very long trailer? A dump truck is going to require a pintle to get the weight capacity, a bp is efficient and lots of people can borrow your trailer, a GN has great maneuverability and weight transfer to the towing vehicle. This is almost like what is the best tire? It depends on what you are doing.
A pintle hitch can /will be much stronger than a regular trailer ball. The strongest 2-5/16" bumper pull coupler I have seen was rated for 20k, most are rated for less. Pintle hitches can be rated up to 40k or more.
Don't know what you are pulling it with but unless it is a dump truck or something a regular ball will likely be stronger than the hitch assembly / receiver tube on the truck. Pintle hitches offer some advantages offroad because the the trailer can articulate up and down easier than it can on a ball.

I have a mahindra 3316 with backhoe and fel . I have a 16ft open deck car hauler now and am looking for something with a full deck . My truck is a 1/2 ton chevy 4x4 with 4.8 lt motor . I have towed it with no problems . The open deck has a 2" ball and the one I looked at has a pintle hitch . Much heavier and I guess harder to pull . Thanks to all for the information .

Lots of trailer brands out there to choose from. For your setup I' say stick with a full deck 7K car hauler (maybe an 18'er). Never hurts to have a little more room. Most will have a 2 5/16" hitch. I prefer a wood deck over a metal deck. I think they are less slippery for winter use. Trailer weight will be on average 1800-2200 for a basic trailer with ramps giving you a load capacity of around 5K +/-. I've owned many brands over the years. Current trailers are a PJ tilt bed and a Cross Country dump, both 14K but way overkill for your needs.
