Ford 2120 & John Deere 450B
I have a trailer with an 18' bed and 7k axles.
Am I going to find a way to trailer a Ford 2120 with loader and backhoe on it?
Perhaps with it backed on and the back hoe hanging near the tongue of the trailer?
I do know I need to tie down the tractor as well as the two attachments separately. I am planning on using car tie down straps.
Anyone with experience using a similar setup?

Thanks in advance!

Tractordata says your 2120 weighs 4500 by itself not counting a loader or a backhoe. I'd guess your BH weighs another 11-1200 lb. plus 1000 or so for a loader. plus additional weight if the tires are loaded. That's at least 6700 lb or more. Too much weight for a 7K trailer. If your trailer has 2 - 7K axles then your OK.

Thank you!

gvwr of trailer is 7k, it has two axles, but I believe them to be 3500# axles. I guess I could make a separate trip with the backhoe or loader, unless either would fit in the pickup bed. I am not going to push it, as I make the trip often, so doing it in a couple of trips is ok.

For the long term, I will look to upgrade the trailer, something I can still use for my cars but also big enough for the tractor with attachments.

Yep, if 7k trailer, you are only good to haul 5000-5500# or so. Depends on what the trailer weighs empty. 7k is the TOTAL that is allowed over them axles. So you have to account for the trailer weight.

And without knowing what model BH, it is likely that George's estimate could be on the low side. Usually a BH and loader properly sized for the tractor will just about double the weight. I wouldnt be a bit surprised if that machine is pushing 8-9k.

Even just the tractor and loader could be a bit much for the trailer.

Make as more than one trip for sure

forget it. I have a 1910 and it's smaller than yourself and with woods 7500 and loader it's 5600 with turf tires.. I have a 9900gvwr and it's perfect. you trailer likely can't handle more than 5000.. just trade for a 5/6 ton trailer... before you toast a wheel bearing, blow a tire, or can't stop fast enough with those little brakes.

i agree.. I have an old ford 850 with loader and woods 6500 hoe. it's more than my 7k trailer can haul.

at a minimum you need a 10k, and probbaly WANT a 12k trailer to be safe.

average 16' trailer weights 1200# an 18' probably more like 1500.

go for a 20' 12k.. and you will be just about right. ( if you can go GN.. get a 25' drop deck and 14k and just have at it!

Thanks for all the responses. I did trailer successfully the tractor with loader, and left the backhoe behind. I am looking at upgrading the trailer, and was leaning towards a 10k trailer because of some questionable aspect that some states might have restrictions on towing 10k or greater trailers with a regular license. Has anyone had such issues? If not, I may try for a 12k trailer, but do want a car trailer for the lower height, as I tow cars more than the tractor....

Not sure about NH but NY amended its license classifications a few years ago for a class D (regular license). In NY a regular drivers license allows you to drive a vehicle up to 26,000 lb. It also allows that license to tow a trailer over 10,000 lb. if the GCWR of the tow vehicle and trailer is 26,000 lb or less. I looked at NH DMV online but only thing I saw was the trailer must be under 10,000 lb. Maybe another NH member can clarify.

Thanks, I am concerned about other states than NH as well, since when I tow the cars I could easily be anywhere, as I have towed as far as FL in the past.

I think I found the info you're looking for on the FMCSA site.

Question 2: Is a driver of a combination vehicle with a Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) of less than 26,001 pounds required to obtain a CDL even if the trailer Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) is more than 10,000 pounds?

Guidance: No, because the Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) is less than 26,001 pounds. The driver would need a CDL if the vehicle is transporting HM requiring the vehicle to be placarded or if it is designed to transport 16 or more persons.
