So, the new Colorado is probably 6" narrower than my previous full size, and what was difficult before becomes impossible now - trying to see behind an 8'5" wide enclosed trailer when driving down the road. A couple months ago I did a little searching and found some extendable towing mirrors that fit the previous generation Canyon / Colorado, but they were in Australia and the cost was 750 per pair, plus shipping, plus whatever import fees would apply, so even if I find ones for the new model they are really cost ineffective.

I've seen both wired and wireless cameras and I think that it would be at worst half the cost of a pair of mirrors, and possibly far less if I get lucky. Many of the ones I've seen are designed as true backup cameras and work when put into reverse. I'm looking for real time rear view when driving forward, and not just when in reverse - especially since I already have the onboard backup camera. What I'd really love is the ability to stream whatever camera feed I end up with through the in-dash LCD. I mean, it's already there, so why scab on an external monitor when I have one built in? I'm going to keep searching myself, but if any of you come across any information related to this or similar, please let me know.

The backup operated feature has to do with the DC power is supplied from the reverse lights. You can wire the source of power from somewhere else. I will not install another camera wired to my reverse lights again. Using it to back to a trailer hitch is a pain -- backing up, missed the ball, pull forward, put it in reverse, wait for the camera to synch to the camera, then proceed.

Take a look at Garmins combo GPS and rear view camera. Pretty slick and I'm sure it can be used either as a backup or full time rear view camera.

Yeah that would work, just power the camera from something other than backup lights. However this would also kill the GPS function with the camera working all the time so he would want to include a switch of some sort. He does however want a camera with a mirror function. If he goes with a full time video display I've found the back of the sunvisor to be a dandy place for the display. There when you want it and easy to see but gone when you don't want it just by flipping it out of the way.
