Any of you guys know if the Scotts 1642 has a sealed transmission? I seem to have a nasty leak and was attempting to find a way to add more fluid to the system.
My locat JD shop won't answer any questions over the phone even thought I have spent $500 there this year doing a ton of maintainance.

Need more information to determine which transaxle is in the Scotts 1642. Can you find a tag/name on transaxle such as Peerless, tuff toque etc?

if u didn't buy it there they probably won't look at it.
because it would take 2 many man hours 2 research the parts info. than u would be upset with the cost. if it is an old mower maybe look at buying a new 1. i think murray built this for scotts. y can't u take it 2 where u got it?

ZTRh- try the folks at tufftorq.com. Most Scotts used a 'sealed' tufftorq hydrostatic transaxle. They do have a fill plug somewhere on top, it's often hidden by the input pulley/fan. It is difficult, but possible to pump out/in oil from the top hole. Tufftorqs mostly use 10w30 or 15w40 motor oil.

G/luck

It's a Tufftorq K51A. You guys were right on the money.
I may have the take off most of the mower
rear body to find an opening in the thing unless somebody knows where the bolt is.... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

You probably have to take off the rear fender, seat etc. Not necessarily that difficult, a few bolts & it will all come off in one piece. That transaxle takes 2.25 liters of 10w30 oil. You can find a parts breakdown by going to tuff torq then clicking on catalog/order on the left then K51 then K51A.

Well, I got it done. I was unable to take apart any of the rear assembly on the Scotts because of the way it is made. I had to work in a small area and take off the two caps and add oil through a narrow hole from the battery area. The thing runs like a top now. So now I sell it to make some cash from purchasing my new ZTR.

Had my Scotts 1642 k51a transmission out last winter to replace pulley and fan shaft when it went bad.
About same time I noticed a slow leak on the LH side. Seemed to be out of the brake entry point. Ordered the brake kit from Tuff Torque which had a "O"ring and Seal. Didn't help. Very slow leak still. Bothered me that it could run dry and die. I removed the battery under the seat and cut a hole in the battery compartment floor with my dremel.About 4 inches square.Helps to have had it out and know where things are. Can now check the fluid and add some without dropping the tranny. Be very careful if trying this with a sawsall as cutting blindly could damage fan or other tranny parts underneath metal floor.
If anyone has had luck fixing this brake assembly leak on the transmission let me know.

I ran my Scott's 1642 last summer with the small leak in the K51a transmission brake . i checked the fluid several times thru the hole I cut in the battery deck and added a little each time. As I mentioned above I ordered the seal kit and replaced the brake seal and "O" ring to no avail. The seal gave me a hard time installing. The seal looks like a very small tire with a spring around the inner diameter. I was not confident I installed it well enough to have a good seal. It bothered me that it still leaked so I removed the tranny again and ordered just the seal kit. I removed the tranny again and with more diligence installed a second seal and put everything back together again. I've mowed my 1 acre lot 3 times now and still no leak so I think I got it this time. The guys are helpful at Tuff Torque if you have questions.
