New Chinese tractor owner (used). No reliable manual. Have a Jinma 254, been modified some. Been reliable until last week. Suddenly no hydraulic fluid (been using very little prior). Strange thing is, fluid blows out the shifter, tranny is overflowing. Put almost 5 gal in hydraulic tank, fluid blows out shifter (blew off the boot). No pics in manual on either system, let alone how the systems are interrelated. Are they really? Is some internal seal blown? Just an unexplainable coincidence? Tightened some loose bolts on the hydraulic side, but still loosing way more fluid than should. Does anyone know a good, readable, English manual? What's happening with all the hydraulic fluid?

Are you sure it is a Jinma or could it be a similar looking chinese tractor? If you look at: http://johnstractor.com/files/HydPowerLift.jpg you will see that the hyd tank is seperate from tranny. From that picture, it doesn't look like the hyd fluid has any easy access to tranny through seal, etc. A hole through that bottom plate would do it, but that wouldn't be any easy thing to do. The hyd tank only holds about 2 1/2 gallons.

Yup, it's a Jinma - says so all over. The pic you posted is actually in the manual, well, the lines and numbers are, there's no pic attached (have lots of those, and what pics there are are in Chinese).
Great website, by the way, been using it alot since getting this tractor. Do you happen to have a tranny pic (another missing pic)? Or better yet, a manual (or, for us mechanically reclined types, "Tractor Fixins for Idiots")?
Am I correct in thinking there's no pressure in the gearcase, therefore no reason the lines could be crossed at the pump (don't know how'd they jump there anyway, haven't messed with it)?
Here's what started it:
Working on bare dirt - no signs of oil. Went to change implements. 3pt wouldn't pick-up new implement, no hydraulics (no oily sign anywhere). Tightened bolts, put almost 5 gal. in the little 2.5 gal tank, moved up to wash off to check for leaks. Already low, but no sign of leaks. Went back to work, bare ground. That's when the shifter started leaking (actuall blowing at times). Very noticable trail on ground. Refilled hydraulic (tranny full). Ran tractor, hydraulic low, shifter leaking, now high/low leaking, too. Can't find any significant hydraulic leak, just weeping at back seal (gone when tightened bolts). Where's it all going?

Neither the transmission or the hyd tank res should have any pressure on it. Given you have a Jinma and it is obvously leaking into the tranny, you will need to tear it down. Remove the suction side filter and look intop the tank, to see if you have a hole or crack in bottom plate. You will need to take the whole tank off. I haven't done it, but others have when adding the backhoe pto shaft. When repair completed, you will need to drain and replenish the tranny, if you are using straight hyd fluid.

If there is a hole in plate, inspect the tranny for what caused the hole. A gear or something had to hit it. Probably more damage there to repair. If cracked, could be something small was underneigth the plate, and finally cracked. Inspecting closely around the outer edge, might reveal the crack.

PS: What I have, is on the website.

We have had a few that lifted the 3-point too high broke the stop in the hydraulic res. and cracked the bottom plate. That is prob. what has happened here also.We have the parts in stock, you would need to pull off the 3-point lift assembly to know for sure.If we can help you please let us know

Tommy to the rescue again. We are going to have to call you the Lone Ranger. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
sounds logical and I think you hit the nail on its head on that call. Not a real big costly repair although not cheap for that housing but definately better than a cracked trasmission/differential housing.

That's it. Lifter all banged up, stop bent and even the cast is broke (looks old, wasn't just me!), piston is sitting in a hole...
Got a sinking feeling while draining the tranny and seeing the hydro go...
Think this is the time where I just put all the pieces back on and write "my tractor doesn't seem to be working, dear" on the honey do list?
One other thing, never opened up the tank like that, found why the drain was so slow (filled up with spare pieces), and also found what looks like a well-slimed mouse in the tank - is that a feature of Jinma?

Hey Shovels,

Glad that the Technicians here were able to help you. They are really helpful here.

How many hours on your tractor now?

That mouse may have came a long way to get to your place. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Maybe it won't be too expensive to repair. Just be sure while you are at it to drain the transmission and check and flush with Diesel Fuel to try and remove any thing that may have gotten down in there.

Does any one know what allowed the lift to operate over it's inttended range to cause this?

Sorry about the Damage, but
Try and have a nice day anyway,
Joe

I had the same thing happen to me on a 254 Schenniu. The hairline crack in the hydraulic reservoir allowed the fluid to weep into the transmission over a period of weeks. The hardest part about the repair was lifting that cast iron hydraulic reservoir off the top of the tranny. That was a hernia maker for sure, might have been easier with a hydraulic engine hoist of sorts. I was told that my problem was caused by using a heavy box blade but I really never bought the story. Good luck in your repair.

I got a feeling I'll be needing a lot of help! The hour meter hasn't worked since 1870 hrs, which was sometime prior to the guy who I got it from, who used it on construction sites (he figured he at least doubled that, but it never worked for him). It's a dang hard working little tractor, and I'm not very easy on it. What I like especially is that all the nuts & bolts aren't metric, heck, can't even find that on "American" tractors! Been lucky with modifying things for the parts I can't find, but this one might have to be factory spec.
What do I have to do so this doesn't happen again (forget the learn to drive - hasn't worked yet)? Haven't torn it all down yet, but if the piston ball is half-way through the housing, that's not a good sign (haven't been able to get into creeper gear lately, either..). I may be learning more than I ever cared to know. Strange thing about it, the hydraulics were working better than ever, just using lots of fluid (had to finish a job yesterday), nice and smooth - it never ran like that!
Should I put another mouse back in when I refill, if it's been there all these years and the tractor is still in relatively good shape, maybe it's some sort of Chinese good luck?
Where can I find an English manual (with pictures!), and parts?
Thanks everyone for the help.
