I'm new to the tractor maintenance for a 362 Massey Ferguson. I need to change the transmission/hydaulic oil. The owners manual says to use SAE 10W/30 up to 20W/50. Is this regular motor oil for the transmission/hydaulic system? Does the transmission and hydraulic system pull oil from the same reservoir? I See only one cap for adding oil. Yep I'm a rookie at this so be gentle and thanks for your help.

Transmission oil isn't engine motor oil.

In today's market you basically have 2 oils available.....For older equipment with manual or power assisted steering (not hydrostatic), manual transmission, hydraulic connections for front end loader and implements connected to the 3 PT or drawbar, regular Trans/Hydraulic/Differential Fluid (THD) is adequate. The minute you add anything hydrostatic, or wet brakes or any of the newer gadgets you need to go to the Premium THD oils. Usually the container lists the intended uses and Tractor Supply for one, has the word Premium in small letters just above the THD. Also on the TSC oil the John Deere spec J20C will appear on the rear of the container for applicability....that's the one I use as if any equipment specs are listed, that one will be there.....even though I am not currently running any JD tractors.

If it's spec'ing sae 10w30 for the trans then yes its motor oil. I have a couple peices of equipment that use motor oil for the hydraulics (my Case skid steer uses 10w30 for the hydraulics and chain cases).

What trans do you have in your tractor.

From what I can find on the net, it's listed as a sliding gear transmission 8F/2R. The owners manual doesn't specify the type of trans.

From what I can tell they don't change the fluid for the different trans options, just curious which version you had.
