I decided that 75 hours was likely enough for the first transmission oil change regardless of the mfg stated 200 hours. Since tractors require 50 hours, I thought this was likely a good idea for the mower.
The manual only had like 11 steps to do this and about 9 of those involved putting the oil back in. They neglected to mention that the factory has two trained gorillas that assemble these. One puts on the oil filters and the other puts in the top fill plug (actually you cant fill from there as it only vents). After getting about every tool out of my tool chest, I finally used my Harbor Freight oil filter pliers and with much effort, finally got the filters off. There is only enough clearance on the top so that you can move the filter about 1/16 turn at a grip assuming the pliers aren't slipping. Luckily after about 1/4 turn, I could then turn it off by hand.

Next was trying to remove the top fill plug which has to be removed in order to vent the transmission when refilling. I did try unsuccessfully to fill it without removing the plug after about 30 minutes of trying to get the right sized allen wrench on the plug. Ferris did provide an access hole in the frame to get to it. TOO BAD they put it about 3" from the plug and of course the frame is so close that there is barely enough room to get the short end of a standard allen wrench in. You can see the plug by looking thru the frame in front of the rear wheel but you cant reach it from there. You must be under the mower and with the aid of a mirror, you can find the plug. Getting an allen wrench of unknown size in the hole with no visibility is not an easy task. After fiddling around with about a dozen different allen wrench sets and finally finding a short one that fit but only to discover that they had that other gorilla putting the plugs in and I couldn't move it with the short wrench. I finally got out my micrometer to measure the short one and then find a longer handle one of the same dimensions. Finally now I had two wrenches that fit, one to break the joint and then get the shorter on so I could spin it around without removing the wrench. Now over an hour into this oil change and just about ready to pour some oil.

You fill thru the reservoirs and the 20W-50 oil is slow to fill. OEM says 2.2 quarts per side. Fill till the oil if flush with the top fill oil. Since you cant see into the hole at all, it is just a process of pouring till it starts to run out and then try to get the plug back in before too much oil escapes to your concrete floor then hope that the reservoir is not too full so as to leave room for expansion of the hot oil. I got the first one filled about right after loosing about half a pint on the floor before I could get the plug started back in. The second one was a bit easier to start and I only lost a couple of tablespoons on the concrete BUT the reservoir was too full so I had to remove some oil. I only did this after running the mower for about 15 minutes mowing a small and section of yard. Evidently the filters fill as you are filling because the level didn't drop any when mowing.

I will check the level again when cold just to be sure.

This would have been a pretty easy job, even with the super tight filters, if Ferris had just located the access hole directly on top of the plug AND put a regular hex head bolt plug in it rather than the recessed allen wrench type. Then a socket on an extension would have made quick work of an otherwise complicated and difficult task.

I guess no one is interested in complexity of changing hydrogear oil in a Ferris. It may be the same issue for other mower models also.

Thanks for the warning, I'll have to check my IS700 out and see if it is as difficult. I may consider taking it to someone with more patience than me to do the job.

Just got done changing the straps on my pickup fuel tank after one rusted off. If I knew how much greif I was going to have before I started I would have gladly taken it to someone to repair it.

The dealer I bought my Dixon Ultra 61 from said that when they change the hst oil they will fill and flush each drive with new oil once before the final fill. Probably overkill but they should know better than I do, right?

It sounds like you need a set of these Gary.

Hello Gary....
Good writeup! :)
I am about to do this on my parents Ferris.
D you remember the size of the hex plug by chance?

Thanks.........

Gary, I didn't have my IS700Z back then, so never saw the post... until I searched just now because I am getting ready to do my first change. I haven't decided which 20W-50 oil I am going to use.. considering using synthetic. Do you recall what oil you used? Thanks

I used the Walmart Super Tech since that is the only 20W-50 oil I could find.

Another oil change has happened since then and it is another story to tell:

Next oil change, I couldn't budge the hex vent caps so I had to figure a way to make the oil go in from the reservoirs.

I finally decide that a vacuum on the system would pull the oil in so I filled the reservoir tanks then with the aid of some plastic bags made an air seal for my vacuum hose. I would suck a vacuum on the tank and bubbles would percolate up from the hydrogear into the tank. Then release it and the vacuum would suck the oil out of the tank and into the motor. I took several (cant remember exact number-about 1/2 pint in the reservoir at a time to get 2.2 quarts in the hydrogear motor)times doing this, refilling the tank, repeating the vacuum and letting it suck the oil from the reservoir before the air was purged out and the system was full of oil .
It wasn't much more messy than filling it blindly as described in 2015.

I know it's been a long time since the original post. But I've broken two allen wrench trying to get the vent cap off.

Can you explain further what you did regarding making a vacuum. What hose are you referring to?

I'm sorry I can't help you guys, but just wanted to let you know that not all Ferris mowers use that same Hydro- Gear transmission. So if you have one of the larger models don't panic.
I just did My IS2100 ZT. It has the 4400 transmission and is much easier to service. Each unit takes 5 qts. of oil and it maybe took 1/2 hr per side.

If you go to hydro-gear's web site they have instructions and videos that may be of some help. Commercial Oil Kit - Hydro-Gear

A friend has a ISX800 series that I'll be servicing for him. After reading these posts, I'm not looking forward to that job.

This is for my 2016 Ferris is600z. I used a hex key tool for the top drain port. I was able to loosen plugs using the below hex key, it's 1/4". You can see the plug from under the seat.(did not have to go under the machine) I just had to reach my hand under and get the hex key attached. One side was harder than the other, but both loosened fairly easily. I hope this helps someone.

Additionally, Hydro-Gear transaxles take 30 weight detergent motor oil for the most part, not gear oil unless specified in the service manual or online on their website. I change mine every 2 years.

HG sells a change kit that makes it much easier.

not sure the kit makes it much easier. Either way you have to take out the drain plug. With the kit you have to screw the fitting onto the port(usually hard access),then pump the oil through drain plug opening...otherwise you just pour the oil into the reservoirs. Either way you still have to purge.

Never an issue removing the drain plug, not that I do that because I don't. I remove the 2 bolts that attach the charge pump cover and drain the units that way. That gets it all out. Far as refilling, I remove the vent hoses and fill them from the top.

changed filters today. Ferris on the is600z has the frame blocking one of the bolts for the filter shield. Needed to get off with a swivel socket and extension, kind of a pain. Vent plugs easily removed, 2 quarts each side before oil started coming out vent ports. Filled to cold mark. Purged jacked up, drove around a bit and had to add more oil. Drove around some more and added more oil again before reservoirs leveled off. Good thing I bought 5 quart jug as 4 quarts would have been short.
