I have a 2003 Mahindra 5500 4WD. I have been trying to find out what transmission oil to use. The owners manual specifies 80wt for my climate. The dealer's say use universal tractor fluid. Even the fluids recommended in the owners manual conflict, and are not close to 80wt. I can hear the gears in my transmission turning at idle in neutral (could be normal), and I'm thinking the oil may be a little light. Anybody have an answer, or is it that important?

UTF fluids are have a additive package designed to be used as a gear lubricant in common sump tractors. Personally as a lubricants consultant I feel if you have a seperate resivour for the transmission gear oil then that is what I would use, a gear oil. You will find many tractor manuals that recommend either UTF or a 80W and some a 80W/90 gear oil. I get the feeling they often list UTF as one option because it keeps inventory simple for tractors with seperate sumps.

I would run the 80w90 if I were you. Mahindra started recomending the UTF as it seemed to cut down on the transmission whining. I for one don't feel that the whining hurts a thing other than some people think it is annoying.
