The newer model 2000 and 3000 Cubs look to have synthetic hydrostatic fluid put in them from the factory. I don't know what year this was first used. I would first find out what the manual recommends for your hydro.

Either way, synthetic or not, I would use only a fluid made for use in a hydrostatic tractor transaxle. The regular (non-synthetic) Cub Cadet branded fluid is about $3.50 for a quart bottle, not too bad considering you would be taking no risks, regular ATF supposedly does not have the temperature stability charecteristics or detergents included in the OEM hydro fluid. They synthetic from CC is near $9.00 a bottle, but in the case of the hydro has a lot longer interval between changes.

As hydrostatic transaxles can be expensive units to repair, I would take no risks and use the good stuff with a fluid change.

If you have a CaseIH dealership close just go buy Hytran Ultra from them. a 5 gallon bucket will be around 15 to 20 dollars but you will get more than two oil changes from that one bucket. I worked at a CaseIH dealership and Hytran Ultra is all we used for hydro oil. If you don't have a CaseIH dealer close then you might have a Case construction dealership close then perhaps. Or even a New holland dealer would have the same hydraulic oil since both are part of CNH global. And plus this is MUCH cheaper than what Cub will charge you. Buying oil by the quart will kill ya, Buy it in gallons or five gallon pails. I work at a Deere dealer now so I run Hygard(not Low Viscosity Hygard The regular Hygard because it is more like what cub runs)oil in my Cub now because I can easily get oil and at a discount.I know that the Cub you mentioned would not have came with the synthetic oil in the trans as I was still with the Case dealer when that tractor was made. I know that if you are close to a Deere dealer then you can run Hygard oil as well. If you do run in the winter you might consider running the Low Vis Hygard for just winter time and the regular Hygard in the summer. The Deere guys will try to tell you other wise but don't listen to them. I would also say to stay away from the hydraulic oils you can get at walmart or the TSC type stores.

In my previous post I mis quoted the cost for a 5 gallon bucket of Hytran. I appologize for the error. The price is more like 35.00 to 39.00 dollars depending on the dealer. But still this equates to about 1.85 per quart which is MUCH cheaper than what Cub will stick ya with.

It depends what it specs. Hytran Ultra is completely different than the 'new' and expensive "CC drive system fluid plus" that cub puts into it's hydro-gear driven transaxles. I dunno the exact specs of the hytran, but it looks/smells /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif/pours different than the new CC stuff.
