I blew out the seal on the transmission output shaft 2 weeks ago and I finally got my new seals and o-ring. I installed the seal flush with the charge pump housing and installed and re-torqued everything as per the manual (the manual doesnt give any indication that it should **** proud of the charge pump housing). Upon installation of the seal i noticed that the output shaft has a ridge/step up and that the seal must ride the step in order to provide a seal around the shaft.

Long story short the seal around the shaft has unfolded in one area and liquid gold is pouring out of the transmission again.

How is this seal supposed to be installed? if i dont push the seal all the way into the charge pump housing it wont sit tight around the ridge/step up around the shaft, if the seal is level with the charge pump housing the same problem is likely to happen. I assume there is a happy medium but you cant exactly keep installing seal after seal until it stops leaking.

Its a pricey JD only seal (i cant get it at my local hydraulics/seal house) and I dont want to keep making the same mistake.

Has anyone had the same issue or perhaps any insight? I have checked for shaft play and seems tight.

Not familiar with the seal, but does this rendering of the transmission identify the seal you speak of?

yes it is seal No. 2.

The seal has been pushed in with a seal press so that the "outside" of the seal is flush with the charge pump housing No. 25.

I Guess the seal could possibly be pushed in deeper so that it bottoms out in the housing but i have never installed a seal that way before....its usually installed flush with the housing.

Years ago when I did a lot of mechanic work we would run into a bad/defective seal, you would not know it until you installed it and it leaked.

Internal leak that building to much pressure on the seal?

No the seal blew out due to -30 degrees Celsius temperatures and me not warming up the hydraulic system enough before turning the PTO on - fluid came out like molasses.

Drive the seal in till the lip is past the step on the shaft. The step should be visible when you look at it.
One thing you might want to check is how deep the bore is in the housing and then measure the seal to see how deep you can seat the seal.

You might also want to change to a different hyd fluid.

still waiting on parts...

I am already using JD low viscosity I just should have warmed up the hydraulics longer instead of rushing.

So if i push the seal past the step wont the seal tear again? or is there enough "play" in the center of the seal to accommodate the bigger diameter of the stepped shaft?

Look at the shaft, you should be able to see where the old seal lip was riding. Is it on the step part or before the step. If you look at the picture above it looks like the seal is riding on the step part of the shaft. Allot of times when these seals that need to go over a step the seal comes with a plastic insert to expand the rubber lip which helps start the seal lip over the step.
When you pickup the new seal, look at before you walk away from the parts counter and see if it has a plastic sleeve in the center. If not go and talk with the service manager and see what or how they install seals like you need.
