Has anyone built a tree branch shredder . Would a hammer mill have the potential to work if a way of getting the cuttings away was figured out .I had also thought about a straw chopper from a combine but I can't see that being rugged enough.

lots and lots of "chippers" out there, from little gas engines, to pto tractor versions to large tow behinds. generally the larger they are they are the larger the diameter they can take in. and they all depend on size of chips they make.

there be "de-bark" machines, that strips bark off of branches, to make posts. there be fingers inside of unit that strip the bark.

there are stump grinders. from rented machines that are like a push mower, to tractor mounted units, to skid steer mounted units.

forestry mulchers, as well.

I'm pretty sure I've seen articles of chippers made from old hammer mills in Farm Show Magazine. Last time I checked non-subscribers could access a limited number of articles free on line.

Hi there! For the best ride on mower for hills, I think you may also take the help from an expert. As the expert will guide you and suggest you in a better way for the best mower ride. There is also website available who give more information about the best mower and the information regarding mowing. I am also planning to buy a mower soon.

A busted flail mower with hammer-type flails would be a good start, I'd think. Or just buy a hammer flail, and drive over the stuff you want shredded ...

I live in orchard country, that means HUGE amounts of brush/tree limbs to get rid of...

EVERYONE here buys a "quality" rotary cutter, all the brush is piled between the tree rows and then run over with a tractor/rotary cutter... It makes short work of brush and get's it started toward composting back into the ground.

I DO handle a lot of my brush with my rotary cutter, although I also have a couple brush piles on my place, but rotary cutting them, does work VERY good.

Depending on planed future use of land,Hugelkultur is an interesting and beneficial option. I have two mounds started 4 years ago that I'm very pleased with. I was amazed how much material srank so I started another mound 2 years age that I plan adding a lot of branches to every year for another 5 years before planting. Rather than tossing complete limbs on, I sometimes trim limbs from trunks and branches too large for my 8 hp chipper, make firewood of trunks or throw them on pile, load limbs on trailer, put chipper on tailend of trailer, back trailer to mound and blow chips onto pile. Chips fall down between limbs. I add manure (grass clippings,horse/cow manure) along with soil. My next move is extend arobic septic sprinkler line to near mound and use an impact sprinkler to keep mound moist. Where rainfall is limited,it is especially attractive. To realize full potential of Hugelkultur in arid regions,I recommend reading about Keyhole Gardening in Africa.
