Has anyone bought trees from Wal-mart? They have some 5' Bradford Pears in pots for $13. Lowes has the same size for $18. Musser Forests doesn't sell Bradford Pears, or I'd get them from there. I'm just wondering if anyone has any Wal-mart trees (they are by Better Homes and Gardens) and if they survive or not.

Most stores have a one year replacement guarantee, but my wife doesnt think walmart does...www.millernurseries.com offers some really good fruit trees, you pay more but they are guaranteed.I have had good luck with the trees I have purchased.Tom

Danny,
I bought rose bushes also apple trees and never ever never had any luck.

Bought some apple trees locate and they have been growing like a weed.

I was told it depends on what region the trees are from...southern trees ship up north may not stand a good chance.

I guess one gets what they pay for.

Danny,
I haven't bought any trees, just shrubs from Wal-Mart but they've done fine. I bought 2 Bradford pears just like the ones you're looking at from Home Depot last fall for 7 dollars each. They were 1/2 off. Despite assurances from my wife to the contrary, her horses ate them so I don't know if they would have done okay.
Also, I've had nursery people say the Bradford pear breaks too easily and the Cleveland is better. For my purposes, I can afford to replace the Bradfords pretty easily if there is a problem. FWIW

I have purchased many trees and bushes from Walmart and have consistantly had good luck. They cut the prices drastically in late Spring and still offer a one year guarantee on all purchases if you keep the receipt. Three years ago I purchased three pickup loads of trees and bushes from Walmart all at $1.00 per plant. All but perhaps five plants have lived. I did not bother to take the dead plants back to Walmart for a replacement; seemed like that would be taking advantage of them. Basically, from my experiance, Walmart trees and bushes are a wise purchase.

http://www.arborday.com has 2-3 foot Bradford pears for $11.00. The Wal-Mart price looks pretty good. Is there a Marvin's near you? They are in the Alabama area and give a 1 year guarantee and the prices are usually good.

I have had very good experience with trees from Wal-mart. Better, actually than Home Depot or Lowe's and equal to the local nurserys. Never had a wal-mart tree die but HAVE had trees & bushes from HD, Lowes and mail-order die.

Around here Eastern panhandle of West Virginia, Wal-mart gets one, maybe two loads in at the beginning of the season.

Danny,

I bought 4 apple trees from Walmart last year ($12 each) and one peach tree. The apples did fine, but the peach didn't make it. I plan to buy more again this year.

I heard the same thing Grant did, Bradfords break too easily. I wanted to plant them along the driveway. A guy, who ran Outside Gardening at a Homedepot, who I used to work with, said not to buy them because of the way they break. He told me to buy something else...but can't remember what he said.

All the Bradfords are going into bloom right now and they sure look good!
