Trench digging with a 9\" hoe bucket

A quick FYI here about the assertion that wet clay will not clear out of the skinny bucket when dumping. I had no problems today putting in a drain field for a boggy area below my carport. The digging was in some pretty sticky stuff but it was so heavy that it fell out of the bucket from its own weight. The stuff sure does pack in tightly between the lugs on my R4's tho!

Re: Trench digging with a 9\" hoe bucket

I think you could ask this question of 1000 owners, and get nearly as many answers yes and no because of soil conditions.
I've even had wet sany soil here get clogged in my 12" and 16", but no badly.
I can agree that the wetter, heavier stuff may come out more easily than some clay that may only be moist. I think it tends to stick more when it's not saturated.

Thanks for the info. I was told by several people that a 9" wouldn't dump but that's all I need for drainage work. I'm sure various soils make a difference.

I've found that the same thing happens when I'm digging in very wet clay soil with my 12" bucket.

Speaking of trench digging...what is a good bucket size for digging trenches for french drains (smaller 4-6 inch pipe)? For that matter is there a good all purpose bucket to get with a new 75 BH on a CK30?

I think that on your CK30 a 16" bucket would be good for all around use. This is just my opinion as others will surely chime in with theirs.

Re: Trench digging with a 9\" hoe bucket

The 9" works well for the smaller pipe but doesn't give you much room to walk in if you have to. The 16" bucket seems to be the most common for all around use. If you have an extra few hundred, get a 9 or 12 for trenching and then a larger 18 or 24 for your bigger digging. If I remember right, the 9 is $180 and the 18 is $260. One of the members here has the 36" and has mentioned he can move a lot. Everybody has their own likes with bucket size. I guess you need to think of the main things you want to do with the hoe and can you afford to have two buckets. Otherwise, pick a middle of the road which seems to be a 16".

Re: Trench digging with a 9\" hoe bucket

I have no idea if this would work on buckets due to the abasive nature of soil but... We will spray silicone inside a snowblower and chute to keep wet snow from sticking in the blower. It works great in that application but may get quickly worn away in a bucket. I don't have to deal with clay much but have plenty of large rocks that can jamb in my 9" or 16" bucket.

Re: Trench digging with a 9\" hoe bucket

If you have to get in the trench at all I'd say 16" is the minimum (but then I have a 40" waist /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif) Smaller buckets would probably work fine (other than having the potential to plug easier) if all you are doing is dropping something in the trench.

It will if you get in the right soil with the right moisture content.
I was doing fine with my 10'' buckek until i got into the right
stuff.
