I day it was 20 degrees. Yesterday it was 21 with 18 mph winds. I had long underwear, some quick dry pants, tshirt, underarmour long sleeve, and a wool hunting jacket. Gloves and a thick cap and I was fine. The only thing I neglected was lip balm and I didn't drink enough water. I know 20 degrees for a high is child's play for some of you, but what are your little tricks to handle the cold?

Go play in my heated shop, and do the outside work another day. cdf7adde00ddc4d. If I do have to get out in the cold I wear thick socks and boots, my flannel lined pants, snow pants over the other pants, a smartwool shirt, a vest, a down jacket, a mountain hardwear wind blocker shell ( this thing is fantastic as it should be with the hefty price ), gloves, and a hat. I find a face shield helps keep your face protected from wind. Ok you can go ahead and call me a Winnie now.

Chemical hand warmers (buy in bulk)...and bulk "brown" gloves from TSC...I always keep a dry pair of the gloves wrapped around a warmer in a pocket...
the extra pockets on lined cargo pants are great for stashing an extra pair of warmed gloves...

Due to some recent storm damage I have been working on the porch roof...luckily the gas grill didn't get damaged but the side burner makes great instant hand warmer also...!

Dickies insulated bib overalls with the zipper front. I like them better than Carhartts.

I also spray my overalls down with Rust-Oleum NeverWet which makes things hydrophobic (repeals water like ugly and rude repeals women).

I'll just sit here and pretend I have never used exhaust to warm my hands. A four wheeler works best.

In addition to wahtever cushy insulated things I wear, I always add something wind and waterproof like a rain suit, (actually I wear it more to keep the wind out than any moisture, unless it is really snowing hard).

Layer after layer, but hopefully ones that are easy to open or remove when you start to warm up too much.

Insulate your feet from the cold hard ground, and even more importantly from unheated conrete floors.

Even these HF floormats Anti-Fatigue Foam Mat Set 4 Pc will be a lot of help, because if your feet get cold, nothing else will stay warm for long.

20 degrees is a normal winter day. Most people here don't give it a second thought. I work in my unheated barn regularly at those temps.

But this morning it was -9, and that caught my attention.

I agree, pretty much anything under 10F starts to get my attention.

I think it made it up past zero yesterday, today it didn't quite get there. So far this has been a pretty warm winter. It's not that unusual to go a week or more never getting above zero. You learn to just limit your time outside. Not sure if there's any way of adjusting to the cold, some people just tolerate it better. Personally I keep waiting for Al Gore's promises to come true or when I retire I'm heading to a warmer climate.

We didn't see a day above freezing for the whole month of February last year, but the past week has been the only really cold and snowy one we've had this winter.

I didn't miss it at all.

If I had my druthers, we'da moved to somewhere in the lower hills of AZ or NM a couple of decades ago to get away from this white stuff.
