So I wandered around the local scrap yard for a couple hours looking for materials for a project I had in mind. Some luck in that regard, but I also got distracted with some other stuff you guys might find interesting.

the round thing is a clam shell hatch that is about 4 feet in diameter, good for a your fallout shelter:laughing:, more common things are the 4 foot mower, and cat1 3pt arms. There also is a flat head v8 ford engine and transmission.

The funny thing about it is that while the scrap steel starts at .50/lb, most other items have a price, I picked up a 3pt cat 1 center link that was a bit frozen up but looked salvageable, but they wanted 35$ for it...so i put it back down.

Anyway PM me if you want specifics on the location of this scrap yard...You can most likely deduce it with google and my home town as well:)

When you say scrap yard do you mean salvage yard/ junk yard or the place that buys scrap metal? I hauled some scrap metal 2 days ago and saw a vehicle that I may have been interest in some parts of off but they do not sell anything. I would have liked to have that rough cut pictured, looks like 4 footer. The place where I haul scrap metal won't let you take pictures or make a video they have signs posted.

You are lucky. At the closest scrap yard to me I used to find stuff I didn't even know I needed until I saw it! From steel plate, guard rail, 2" x 20' heavy wall steel pipe to a brand new sheet of diamond plate. The last time I went by they said they couldn't allow any one to dig around due to new insurance policies. I said "can I tell one of the guys what I need and he can get it for me?" No deal.

same thing with the scrap yards around me anymore. Still look around for ones that will.

Same deal here, at the yard that buys your scrap metal. Once they buy it, it's on the books and they will not resell anything. They only thing they will do is trade steel barrels pound for pound for your incoming scrap steel.

Its funny how you never know what you can come across at a scrap yard and then realize it's something you've always been looking for! I do that in my spare time rummaging the local scrap yards to find items I might have use for. The nearest facility in my town is SIMS and I usually visit them whenever I need to buy or sell something. You seem to have some interesting stuff with you, will definitely look you up again if I ever need anything.

Hopefully that flathead Ford finds a good home. When I lived in Dayton the big local yard got in a lot of vintage motors, aluminum wheels, old carbs, etc. Usually the guys working there pick the stuff out and keep it for themselves but occasionally we were able to buy some things. If I could get it on the truck or trailer it would just be counted off the weight I'd just brought in.

My buddy had the best find ever - a big block corvette tripower intake with carbs. Someone had just dumped it in the bin (probably a crackhead cleaning out a family member's garage). I ebay'ed it for him for $1600...

Good thread. Keep this in mind. We had something slip to the scrap yard that had a $6k core charge. We searched with no luck. Then operators were offered a $200 cash bounty. The scrap cranes never worked so hard LOL and it was soon found.

They dont allow pics, because of all the stolen cars and scrap that is hauled in!
