I have a friend that trains draft horses and he built a 2 wheel cart that has a plow and a mechanical windlas. He has a a pullie that runs on the axle that when the belt is tensioned it pulls the plow up then he can lock it. It works good on his 2 horse plowed gardens. Its also great when one ets out of hand and he can drop anchor on him. The bigger the horse the bigger the plow he uses. When you get to the end of the road you pull the lever and the winch winds the plow up out of the ground.

It kinda gives one an idea of just what farmers were faced with 100+ years ago when they did not have the equipment we now take for granted. Back then 160 acres was a big farm. It required many hired men to help with the farm work and days were long. My mother remembers the large crews her father had whenever the threshing was being done and filling the barns with loose hay.
We have it so nice today with our "recreational" compact tractors.
