I have a 4500 fwd that suddenly quit running this past weekend while I was shredding a pasture. When I tried to restart, it fired up but choked and sputtered with a black smoke coming from the exhaust. When I throttled up the idle it really started choking. When placed in gear the motor idled down and cut off. Did this several times then I left it for awhile and came back and it fired up and ran fine for a short time then did the same again. Does this sound like a fuel filter clog or possibly a clogged injector. Anybody got a clue as I plan to try to get it running right this weekend.

When my equipment runs too rich (black smoke / choking) I check the cheap and easy first. Intake system / air-filter... removing any source of blockage, then starting engine to check for improvement.

Pretty sure it sounds like a fuel filter. As you know the 4500 has two fuel filters and a water drain on them as well. Suggest if you don't have a filter handy to try and open the water drain on the bottom of the rear filter housing (use a rubber glove). Let it drain for about 15 seconds. Then start the tractor before going to the second filter. Then do the second/front one. If this doesn't cure it somewhat, put in new filters, but only one at a time and start the tractor after each install. BobG in VA

I own one of the earlier 4500's. I had a very similar problem and thinking that maybe the fuel gauge was bad, I tried to remove the fuel cap for a visual check. Guess what? - I couldn't remove it as it had built up a vacuum. Some of the 4500's came from the factory with a faulty vented fuel cap which didn't allow the cap to allow air into a tank to replace fuel being used. The other fellows have good advice too and it very well could be the fuel filters. If it happens again, try to remove the fuel cap first. It's an easy check before spending money on filters needlessly.

Other posible cause could be fuel cap, a while back there where some bad caps with vents that did not work and cause them to die. If it happens again try loosening the cap and restarting, if so replace cap and get the dealer to warranty it.
Could be a fuel or air filter issue also.

I have about 120 hours on this machine and have been pleased with its performance, especially its ability with the FEL. A few electrical problems with the negative ground and with the automatic cutoff switch underneath coming undone and a problem on the location of the power steering line on front left axle, but other than that it has really been a workhorse and will get much more work when I move out to my 14 acres just outside of Luling, Texas. Thanks for all the info and I will get her fixed this weekend.

I'd be very interested to what you found out what the problem was too.......

It appears that it was the fuel cap. I didn't have much time over the weekend, but went out and started the tractor, it began to idle rough and smoke, then I undid the fuel cap and sure enough it began to idle smoothly and stopped smoking. I drove it for maybe 10 minutes without a problem with the cap off and it seemed to have done the trick. I had to leave the farm and have not been back to check thoroughly and will probably not get back till mid week next week, but hopefully that was the deal. A very pleasant surprise - THANKS to you all on the board here for your help with this matter.
