Husky 455 Rancher.

Not two hours ago, the chain jumped the track and chewed a hole through the gas tank.
I had tightened the chain just 20 minutes earlier.
It is clear that the corner of the tank is directly behind the chain assembly, and the tank wall is very thin. Granted, the tank is plastic, but a reasonable person would design a thicker wall where a gas tank is anywhere near the chain.
Had I been cutting near a campfire or any other open flame, it could have been interesting.

Tomorrow, I will check on the warranty. Wish me luck.

I throw a chain from time to time. Not very often. I have always thought throwing a chain wasn't a big deal. Part of the process so to speak. I'm no expert on chain saws but have never heard of a thrown chain cutting into a gas tank.

Either a pretty sharp chain. Poor tensioning or just bad luck. I have tossed chains before sawing up small stuff when it wraps into the drive wheel. Did the saw have a chain catcher on the chain cover? I am a big Husky fan. You might contact Husky to see if they will cut you a deal on another tank. I would be hesitant to try patching it with all of the vibration inherent with chainsaws.

Factory chain. Tensioner built into the chain cover.
Been using this saw for about a year.
I double checked the setting.
I take NO safety shortcuts around chainsaws.

It would be fatal for a saw manufacturer to sell me a chain saw that would split the gas tank when it threw a chain. I wouldn't go back.

My Jonsered 2159 is very similar to your Husky. (They're made in the same factory.) I've thrown the chain a couple times and each time, the chain catcher did its job. Is yours in place?
I never thought of the chain going through the gas tank. Something to keep in mind.

Wait till you do it on a 3120 with no chip deflector installed. :smiley_aafz:

Just, dump mix, clean up the tank area, air dry tank. JB weld the busted up area. Holds for years or till you slap the tank with a chain again.

What is the chain catcher?
