Troy Bilt/Cub Cadet Steering Bushing

Is there any aftermarket/diy improvements for the crappy steering bushing on the MTD lawn tractors?

My troy bilt Super Bronco has gone through 4 of these and now the cut out in the steering plate is worn to the point that the bushing will not even stay in place. My dad's cub cadet has just destroyed its first steering bushing. So, I have two MTD tractors sitting in my back yard waiting to get repaired.

weld a washer to the deck, get a hardened one, the size of the bushing.
