Troy Bilt horse tiller transmission oil-does anyone know???

85-140 Shell Spirax here. Same stuff I use in gearcases on my farm implements. I get it in 5 gallon pails and use a lever hand pump.

i did find out, the NAPA sta-lube GL-4, is almost $30 a gallon....

hey, those of you that are saying the shell, or new holland or o'reilly gear lube is yellow metal safe.....how do you know this???? does it say so on the label???

The Gallon jug i bought said GL-4, 140 weight. Just checked and no mention of
'lube is yellow metal safe'.

Is it supposed to?

Some have said that this is a non issue with today's gear oil. i just don't know for sure.

from what i have "heard" and "read", anything prior to GL-5 is yellow metal safe....the additives they put in the 5 is what is corrosive to yellow metals???? at my age, probably anything would out last me....but it still concerns me enough that i would RATHER put in GL-4......the shell 4 is about $55 for 5 gallons...i think i will do that, before i pay 30 for one gallon....
