I have a few year old Troy Built Horse tiller. The tines stopped turning the other day. When I try engaging the tines it doesn't feel like it is doing anything. Sometimes they turn when disengaged when I start it, then stop turning no matter which way I put it. Any ideas?

Sounds like the gear box. Have you tried adjusting the cable linkage going to the box, to make sure it is engaging all the way, and not just part way, thus causing it to slip out of gear?

Just fixed a lawnmower that acted this way. Took the gearbox apart, expecting to find worn out gears or clutch fingers worn off. All was in great shape. Assembled it, and adjusted the cable to pull another 1/4" to engage, and worked fine.

With the model and serial number, see if you can pull up some schematics of the gearbox on the net, and check out what might be causing it. Or post the numbers here, and we can see if we can be of further help.

Do the drive wheels engage or is everything stopped? If nothing moves - dumb questin but have you checked the drive belt / pulleys? Either the belt may be broken or one of the drive pulleys may be slipping on it's shaft? (I have a 7hp Kohler Horse from the late 70's. Never had that problem but that's the first thing I'd check.)

Yep, if the motor output pulley and tranny input pulley are both still tight to the shafts, and drive wheels are under strong power that rules out keys 27 on page 50 (page 5 of the pdf) and #35 on page 52 (7 of the pdf). If so next most likely suspects would be #7 or #11 on page 56 (11 of the pdf) like Milkman said.

I'd be amazed that the big drive worm gear went - but even if so, I've seen even those on eBay cheap.

It won't be 7, I can feel gears turn when I turn the tines. I'll bet it will be 11. Thanks for the info.

If you can turn the tines with the clutch engaged, I'm betting it will be #7 because you can't turn the tines by hand and turn the worm gear and input shaft. After thinking about it, if you can turn the tines by hand on the Troybilt, either a gear is stripped or the #7 key is stripped.

Pulled the tiller attachment off. All fine there. It is in the clutch somewhere on page 54. Lever 25 turns too easily, maybe screw or fell off or something inside.

It was the bolt and washer(30 and 31 page 54) I ended up putting two regular lock washers and a stainless bolt. Is working so far.

I'm glad I found this old post. Cause now I have my tiller attachment off and can spin the tines sometimes real easy and then it locks up. Betting its either key 7 or 11 this time.

I am having the same problem right now (have a post in this forum detailing it)

Can you explain exactly how you solved this issue? I still have the bolt on the end of the arm, but the whole shaft is sliding along the big nut/plug (part 27)
