I just bought a 1980 Ford F8000 dump truck. The tires are okay, but I'm afraid they won't last too long with 90% of the driving to be on gravel, dirt, and mud. I was looking at Goodyear G282 MSD and they appear to be a little more of an off-road type of tire. The problem: I can't afford to put on 4 at once. If I just got one every six months or so, is mixing them going to be a problem? I will using the truck to take my CDL in a month or two. Will the tester frown on mixed use tires? I'm a rookie with truck tires, at least ones this big.

As long as you have 2/32 on the rear and 4/32 on the front, with no sidewall cuts. You can buy recaps for the back at $200 or so, compared to $400 or so for new tires. Recaps are not allowed on the front.

Bo, Wolfy's info sounds good to me. Recaps on the back and goodin's on the front. DOT test will require the truck to pass inspection as well. Insure that slop in frontend and all air to be in order as well. As far as the way you're going to use your truck I would definately go with minimal costs but safe.

You should try to buy your rear tires in pairs . ( example ) replace both tires on left rear at the same time . This keeps the height of both tires the same and will keep you from just wearing out the new tire If you just replaced one at a time .

I hadn't thought of that. Thanks!

I just decided to go for it and get all four for the back. Since 90% of my driving will ne off pavement, I got something with a little meat in the tread. How do these look for driving through mud or snow? :)

That is not true.

We just had thread about this a few weeks ago.

I've must have lost over a dozen recaps on the highway in the last 6 or 7 years. I will never buy another recap. What good is saving $100 if it will blow out in 5k miles? For a off road only truck, it might be OK. I would never run a recap on the front, legal or not. The tread is not the only part that wears on a tire IMO.

I have a lot of logger that run them on the trailers and if i remember they dont loose a tire that often. These guys i would say run 4-7K month or so and dont blow out one every month per trailer i know. I think most put all new on the tractor but now a days im sure more are running recaps on drivers.

I'm just saying recaps never saved me a nickel in the long run. I used to run recaps on my sod farm truck. I'll admit that sod trucks are often heavier on the back than log trucks (piggy back weighs 6k + the sod load). They never held up for me, and if the weather was hot, forget it.
