You're confusing backspace with offset. You could go to the extreme and have a wide wheel with a huge backspace which would move the tire inward. You'd still be creating a lot of leverage on the spindle......just from the other direction.Couldn't it also put LESS load on the spindles and hubs if the offset were less. Of course with less offset it may be more likely to rub on something but if it didn't rub it should be OK.
The important thing is to retain the original offset for the reasons Renze explained. Especially on a trailer because of the loads involved.
