True ir rumor??? CC 48\" decks won\'t bag...

Hey, fellas...

I'm looking at moving up to a 2544 or 2550 GT in the very near future. When inquiring at a dealer recently, a gentleman told me that the CC 48" mower decks "will not bag clippings" properly. "You want the 50" deck", is what I was told.

I'm curious...is this true? Is that why the 44" deck comes with a mulch plug, because, as the 48", it will not bag properly?

Thanks for any help.

Not sure that's true or not, but why would you want to bag your clippings? Those nutrients are great for your lawn.

Not sure about the 48" deck but I have no problem bagging with the 2544 with 44" deck. The mulch plug comes standard with this rig and we have not used it yet. Why bag? Keeps the wife happy as grass clippings are not brought into the house from me or the dog. For the money the 2544 is a good outfit with no problems yet.

Thanks very much for your input. I have a strong feeling that the salesman told me that the 44 or 48" decks were no good simply because he had none in stock and was looking to push me into the 2550, which I think is more than I need.

As far as mulching...my 1995 2135 has had a bagger on it since new, and I never used it as a mulcher. Not knowing any better, I ask: does mulching leave large clumps of grass all over, or is the grass chopped up into very fine pieces so as not to be so noticeable? I hate spending $500 on the bagger if I don't rellay have to.

Thanks again.

Re: True ir rumor??? CC 48\" decks won\'t bag...

Hi,

When I had my Cub, (2165), the 48" deck was made for discharge or mulching only. The 46" deck was made for discharge or bagging only. I had the 46" deck and was disappointed that I could not have one deck that does all 3. If you look at the bagging decks you will notice that the front of the deck gets deeper from left to right (where discharge/bagging is on the right), this is to channel the clippings from all 3 blades to the bag. The mulching decks (like the 48") stay pretty much the same depth from left to right and hence would not bag effectively. The reality is that one deck is optimized to mulch and the other is optimized for bagging.

i have a 2518 with a 48" deck and have tried to buy a bagger with no luck at my local dealer. he suggested contacting a company called Grass Pump - but i can't find them anywhere - it looks like they may have sold out to John Deere.

i'm still looking for a grass catcher for mine - anyone got any suggestions.

I think the best way to to leave the chute open and let if fly. The grass gets spread out nicely -- and you keep the nutrients in the lawn.

That's what I had to do with my old 1450 and 44inch deck. Then I ran around the 1 acre for another hour pulling a lawn sweeper to pick up the ugly rows and clumps of grass laying everywhere. My 10 bushel bagger on my 3235 with 54 inch deck looks much nicer after cutting. If the grass isn't wet AND I can cut it often it's fine to let it fly, but with my yard that doesn't happen often.

More work
More time
More equipment
More expense
No advantage.
So why bag your clippings ?
