yanmar 1802
I am trying to get my yanmar 1802 back running. I had the starter tested and it had gone out. I had it rebuilt and tried to start it. When I hook my jumper cables up to the leads nothing much happens. I did hook the positive to the starter stud and was able to get it to start to turn over. When I pulled the decompression handle out the engine free spins no problem. So I figured it has to be air or fuel now. Took the air filter off which I had recently replaced and it still seemed fine. In the past I have changed the oil filter and bled the fuel lines. It has ran since then. Could air make its way back into the fuel line if it has never ran out of gas? Only other thing I could think is the exhaust is clogged. Any ideas?

First get the engine to turn over normally, using the key, then deal with why it won't start. Has to be air, fuel or compression.

Did you push the decompression handle back in once she was spinning? If so, what happened?

Alright back with an update. I went to messing around with the tractor. I bled the injectors to make sure there was no trapped air. Had my wife on the tractor and she was playing with the throttle and the decompression to see what it would do. Sure enough it started up and ran with really high rpms and she couldn't get it to go back down. I pulled the handled and inspected the throttle lever. Some how the throttle linkage go in a bind wasn't responsive. I believe that was one reason it wouldn't start with me the first time. I took everything apart greased it up so the spring would re-engage when it needed to. That seemed to fix it.

I do have one additional question. Do these things have an alternator or generator to recharge the battery?

Your 1802 has a dynamo per Hoye's definition (dynamo/alternator). Puts out ac voltage that is rectified to dc and regulated at the voltage regulator. I think a true dynamo puts out dc voltage. To answer your question your 1802 has an alternator.

If you don't see the fan belt driving an alternator, then look for wires going to it under the fan hub.
