i used my new subsoiler/middlebuster to start the line for natural gas: but i whimped out..i couldn't get the thing to go in the ground without someone standing on it: ran it up an down the 100ft several times, but when i started digging the dirt out, i whimped..and called a guy that said he had a $150 minimum with his backhoe: the previous best price i had found was $240..plus i can get a couple stumps dug out for that same minimum price.

A question/observation or two Heehaw,

Did you use it with the middlebuster shovel on it? To go deep, I would use it without the shovel, and have the standard blunt tooth end bolted on the subsoiler end. You will have to make more than one pass, and it will go deeper with each pass. And weight added on does help immensely. Once you are deep enough, put the shovel end back on to open up the hole. I have messed around with mine, and that's the way it worked best for me.

thats exactly how i did it..pulled out a couple pretty good size rocks too: but i have this dislike for shovels: so finally whimped out when trying to get all the dirt out of the ditch. i will someday find a small walk behind trencher and a 3pt backhoe to solve problems like this..

Another option is to use a stump bucket. I have a Markham, which I like. They are a long, narrow bucket with teeth. You can use them to easily dig footers, etc. That is a less expensive option to think about, also.

Those buckets are long and narrow. They are really good for transplanting bushes, also. To dig a trench, I lower the bucket at an angle and drive forward. Maybe 3 passes would get you down 18 inches or so...providing you don't have rocks, etc. to slow you up.
