I just called around and TSC has a 4' pto driven tiller. Does anyone have experience with this tiller? They tell me it has gears instead of a chain. Is the gear a better way to go? What sort of shear pin protection does it have?

Thanks
Bob

BOB ,
I didn't know TSC had a 4' tiller. What kind of price did they give you. A 4' is about what I am looking for. Could you offset the tiller?

From what little I know the gear drive is supposed to be better than chain drive(more durable). Most of the tillers have a slip clutch instead of a shear bolt for protection. Maybe someone with more experience can confirm my thoughts

THe TSC tiller is a King Kutter.

I noticed your tillers come with, depending on the size, a #4, 5, 6 or 8 PTO. What does that mean? Isn't the pto splined shaft a universal size?

Yes a standard 540 RPM PTO shaft on the rear of a tractor is 1 3/8" 6 spline. The size # shaft mentioned is the category # or HP rating of the shaft we supply with the tillers. Like a fertilizer spreader will come with a category 1 or 2 most of the time where a 90" tiller will require a #6 or #8 because the HP demanded by the 90" tiller is much greater than the fertilizer spreader.

Yes, it is offset. Unfortunately, that's all I was able to find out. I have no idea about the size of the offset or the method of offsetting.

Some just move the mounts, some move the gear head with a telecopic shaft to the side gears, and some have a gear head that the shaft passes right through so the head can be slid down a fixed shaft.

It might be different now, but the 4' and 5' KK tillers were both going for the same price when I bought my 5 footer.

I was just going to put a link to Carter & Carter Machinery but I see he beat me to it.I just bought a 42" from them to use with my BX1800 for our garden and I am very satisfied with it.Does a good job and looks like its very well built. For the money these are it.

the 4' is running $999.00 and I still have to find out if it will shift to the side or not. I hope to go back this evening and I will let you know. I know the flyer doesn't say anything about shifting.

CCM (carter and carter) tiller will shift to the side 4" by moving the hitch blocks, and costs around the same depending on where you live. Mark says he can ship me a 49" CCM gear drive for $1000 to Florida. That's a good deal. John

It does...I just don't know what method they use. If you need further evidence, check out The KingKutter Tiller Page.
