Anyone know the deal with these things? I picked one up today from tractor supply. This thing will not go on the steering correctly. The ends on the main bracket hang off the sides and the two clamp brackets they give you can't be secured (bolts are to short) without forcing them tight with pliers, which causes everything to gouge into the steering wheel.

Are they just junk?

Can't comment on the quality of the item you bought, but, when I mounted my steering knob I clamped it over a section of inner tube which I wrapped around the wheel. No gouging; hasn't loosened or slipped in in 10 years -and I do not have power steering.

Key word is 'universal'. Kubota makes a very nice steering knob but it's a bit costly. I find that a steering knob is an absolute necessity especially when mowing.

Try mounting it where one of the center supports intersects with the outer steering wheel. I bought one from a similar farm and ranch store here and it worked fine on my Kubota steering wheel.

Any chance you snag a pic and post it? I'd like to see how the bracket is sitting on the steering wheel.

Lots of different ways to mount these things and most of the successful ways involve some modification of the bracket. If you need to do that in order to get the knob in the right place in respect to straight wheels(very important for easy use and comfort) then do so. IMO the correct position is paramount to even having the thing to begin with.

But with the hydrostatic steering that is on all the newer machines the knob will NEVER be in the same place when the wheels are straight;)

Sorry no pics for you but I think mine was a TSC universal too (silver steel)
And I ended up having one of the two bolts go thru the centre support of the steering wheel. But just a small hole drilled in it and it hasn't moved since .
Advantage of Drilling the centre arm is that there is no way for knob to work its way around the wheel because it is more than just friction preventing it now.

I find the knob very useful no matter where the wheel ends up (with hydrostatic steering,)

I purchased the same steering knob and had the same issues you are describing. I returned it and went to Lowes and purchased the one in my attached picture. Fits well and I went ahead and put two on since it never stays in the same position on a HST steering tractor.

See if this will help. Cursor over the steering wheel and click to see closeup. By using this knob and the R or L brake "she'll turn on a dime and give you 9 cents change!" :D:thumbsup:

Jayste - yes, thats the one I have. The bracket just doesn't seat right on the wheel. I guess you have to lay part of it on a wheel spoke you did? Those Lowes ones look much more simple.

On both my L4350 and B7800 I put my steering wheel spinner on the left side when the wheels were straight and to this day that is where they are.;) Perhaps John Deeres are different? I did have to modify the bracket so it would fit the spoke of the steering wheel. You can see the vise marks in the pic. I picked mine up at a local tractor dealership for about $8 each. Always the first thing I do for my tractor. Would not be without it!

ya know magic, I've wondered about that also. The spinner on my 2630 has always been in the same place when wheels are straight, for over 3 years now. I put mine about 2 o'clock.

Glen, On my B7800 it is at about 10 O'clock as that is where the spoke is and I want my left hand on it. On my L4350 it is at 6 O'clock but does seem to vary from 4-8 O'clock, much more than the B7800.

I use longer bolts with the universal spinner knobs from TSC. It will work with most newer steering wheel. You do not need to get it really tight. It will dimple the steering wheel somewhat and still not be too tight.

Many tractor dealers will have the spinner knobs you need. They are designed for the thicker style of steering wheel found on more modern tractors.

General Lee, I mounted mine just like MagiCheater did and it seats properly. Yes, most of it is on the spoke with only the "lip" of it on the wheel.

My guess is those models do not have full hydrostatic steering...It is certainly not a JD thing;) You can do a search for "spinner" or "spinners" and find lots of threads about them not staying in the same place.
