A friend of mine has a TU180 and noticed oil leaking from the front axle around the steering knuckles on the floor after sitting for a few days. He took it out and ran it for a while then the power steeing went out. He parked it and this morning we looked at it. The fluid in the power steering resovoir is at an appropriate level according to the dip stick and the steering mechanism turns but steering is considerably more difficult (Won't steer at all in 4WD). In 2WD it will steer but requires great force.
He also noticed relative movement between the king pin and the casting of the axle itself (bearing/seal gone bad?).
We pulled the plugs on the front axle (both sides). The side with the questionable seal/bearing had a large amount of what appeared to be grease in it. I'm assuming this is because the seal went bad and the grease for the kingpin seeped into the axle.
Does anyone have a manual or diagram of the front axle of a TU180? (Len Sheaffer?). What would be the closest US model cross over, Bolens? No real big hurry but if parts are long lead we will need to get them ordered soon. I'm asusming these will be standard seals/bearings
Also looking for crosses to a Super-Tech ST 3614 oil filter. He also needs to know what the hydraulic filter is. I think he only ever did one fluid change on this and it was a while ago. I don't think he kept notes on any of it either.
As far as the power steering what should we be checking to see if there was a failure somewhere on thehydraulic side? Or could the two be related somewhow (seal/bearing failure and power steering failure).
Thanks in advaced for all input.
