Are there any reasons why it is good, bad or indifferent to put tubes inside tires that are slowly leaking? They have been plugged a few times too.

just me but i would patch the holes on the tubes prior to installing them or get used to airing them up all the time

Also if you run in thorns be sure there isnt any poking trough the tire.

we used to take a shop rag and run it around inside the tire to check for thorns..

BUT there are lots of them that are in the tire but not yet poking inside

Sometimes on the thorn aspect your better off tubeless with sealer

One of my front tires had a tube in it when I bought my tractor. The other had a very slow leak that I was unable to pinpoint. It would leak down to about 15 pounds in two weeks. I suspect it was leaking around the rim. I put a tube in that tire as well...problem solved.

The only problem I have found with tubes, (besides the preexisting thorn issue Wild referred to), is when they go flat the valve stem does not always stay in the hole, (it does not "lock" in place like a tubeless stem). Use talcum/baby powder on the inside of the tire and deflate the tube after the first inflation so it can untwist its self if necessary.
You may also try putting in some "Slime" I have used it with good results everyone seems to swear by it.

I love tubed tires on a tractor.. the casings get so much abuse.. and the rims do to.. but as long as the tube is intact.. you still got air.

if you are adding a tube to an old tubless tire, remove all the plugs and add patches to the inside of the tire.. also check to make sure there are no protrusions on the inside of the tire.. like thorns, as mentioned,.. or screws etc..

I luv tubeless tires! After Katrina, the roads in our area were littered with roofing nails for 2 years from overloaded trash trucks littering the highways. It was not unusual to get 7 flats in a week. I bought a box of 100 tubeless tire plugs and used them all and bought another. I got to where I could generally find the nail and remove it and plug the tire and air it up in less than 5 minutes at home without removing the wheel. A tube tire will go flat fast on the road and you have to change to your spare and then take the tire apart to fix it.

Both my tractors have tubeless tires on the rear and tubes on the front. I much rather get a flat on rear because it is so much faster and easier to fix. (unless you run over a railroad spike like I posted a while back):(

I have SLIME in all of my tubeless implement/tractor tires. It will fix some pretty big holes..

Hmm.. I don't think a roofing nail could pnetrate my rear tractor tires...

Would depend on what length roof nail we're talking about, more'n likely. I've got a box of 1-3/4" roofers sitting in the bed of my pick-em-up that'd make for a BUNCH of flats on just about any tire.

We've pulled a many of 'em out of back hoe tires around job sites. Some don't cause flats, some do.
