Turbo Noise in 4x20 Series

Q for the board:
Up in owning/operating someone began a thread about enjoying the whistle/whine sound from the turbocharger. I know the sound well - from my F250. Oddly, I cannot hear the turbo on my 4320. Now, it is a loud engine, but wouldn't ya think you could hear that whistle?

So, my question is, can you 4x20 owners hear your turbocharger? Or is it lost in all the other diesel clatter?

From what I know about the 4X20 is that the 4120 and the 4320 have pretty low boost, Which means the turbo doesn't turn as fast thus less noise. The 4520 and 4720 make much more boost and there turbo spins faster thus making more noise. When they finnally had my 4320 running right before they had to upgrade the springs I could just barely hear the turbo when I would throttle down from a full throttle. Now with it still not running right I'm not sure the turbo is even turning, LOL!!!I'm not trying to Bash JD but after my problems with my 4320 I think I'm trading it in on an Orange tractor in the spring. The dealer has had it 6 of the last 14 months I have owned it and JD says thats OK!!!!!!

I can't hear the turbo at all on my 4520.

I think our 4x20's turbos seem quiet because we can't hear them, not that they are quiet. I have not measured my 4520 , but I did look at a deutz diesel in the same hp class. The turbo on it spins much much faster than the larger units. It had considerable noise above 30,000 hertz ( I used an ultrasonic spectrum analyzer).

I can only hear the whine of the turbo when I am brushhogging at PTO speed in deep grass. The sound sort of bounces back to me then. Otherwise, you wouldn't know it even had one.

I can easily hear the turbo on my 4120. The sound is most evident when throttling up or down. It is sort of a jet-like whistling sound very different from the sound of a non-turbo diesel. I have to admit that I really do like that sound. Speaking of sound, this engine is louder than many at idle speed which may give it a "noisy" reputation but at speeds close to and above pto speed the noise level remains manageable.
