I've read more than one post over the years about how people love hearing it (I admit that I too, find it a pleasing sound)

Why do we love it so much? Isn't it "engine noise"?

I'll find myself (even with hearing protection on) listening for it as low as being at idle, and all the way through the rpm range.

  :D

I grew up around heavy equip. Dad had an OTR truck most of his and my life. I have always loved hearing the roar of a well tuned engine in full song. I grew up on 2 cyl JDs and 5020 JDs. Add the turbo whine and you have a lovely harmony. Currently I have a 4320 JD and I have to find excuses to pull our 21' disc so I can listen to that inline 6 bellow and turbo whine. Why? I don't know. But it must be genetic because my 6 year old boy loves to listen to the exhaust note on my diesel pickup, especially under load.

It is in our DNA.

Because we love the sound of power!

HUDR, I assume you have the older 4320? My "new" 4320 would run away and hide at the sight of a 21' disc!

And, while this topic is up, I can't hear any whine from my tractor. I just got an F250 with the powerstroke engine and yes, love that whistle, but am I missing something with the tractor?

My 4320: yes, by its serial number it was built in 1972
No Whine: I am going to assume the reason you have no whine from your tractor is because it is not turbocharged?

That's like asking women why they like shoes so much. :) It's just ment to be.

No, according to the Deere website and owner's manual, there's a forced induction system under that green hood somewhere.
I think I'm going to cross post this in the Deere section.

The whine of a turbo is OK, I guess, but nothing shivers my spine like the sound of a V-12 Merlin in a P-51 at takeoff power. There ain't no dumb conveyor that could hold that sucker back!

Hmmm... must be muffled really well. I know my 6.5 chevies didn't have good whine until I performed some "mods" to the exhaust and intake. It also depends on how much boost is being made.
I just can't understand why anyone would want to strangle an engine and keep it from making that wonderful internal combustion music. ;)
