Any of u who run turf type tires..
Do you have many flats? I wonder if the more tread would help.

I tried higher bias ditch witch type tires but they won't hold up either.

Anyone know the make, size and ply of the factory PT turf tires?

I have been running Turf tires on a B5200 used to keep a private airstrip mowed for the past 18 years. Have not had a flat yet and this tractor sees a lot of run time.
The turf tires leave no footprint even durring wet conditions.

I would not be without them for my application.

Sorry can not help with the sizing question.

Have you installed slime in all your PT tires. Those tires would take about a quart and a half each. Are they leaking down, or coming off the rim?
You could also get 4,6, 8 ply tires.

i like turf tires the best, they simply don't tear up the yard that much when it's soft.and they have the best traction in the mud and snow when you put the chains on them. cross chain on ever other link and they lay flat, not like a tractor tire.they will dry rot before you can wear them out......jim

I run turf tires on our PT425. I do a lot of brush hogging through multi-flora rose bushes (see this video). I only have flats on my front tires, never the rears. The thorns pierce the tread and sidewalls. Slime helps quite a bit. However, I have found that a tube with slime works even better. I have one tire with a tube and slime and it has stayed up for two years.

I also spun one of my front turfs off the rim when spinning the tires in sand while pushing on some stumps. That tells me that the turfs give great traction in sandy soil. Our entire property is sand and sandy loam. I have never gotten stuck with the PT. I had a much larger 8000# tractor with R4s that would get stuck often. So that leads me to believe turfs are better than R4s in sand. No mud, so I have nothing to compare for that situation.

As for snow and turfs, well, on pavement they provide great traction when plowing our driveway. However, once you get off the drive and onto a slight side slope in snow, the unit will crab and lose traction quickly. I would think turfs are better for plowing snow on level pavement than bar tires just because of the increased contact with the pavement and lots of horizontal treads for traction. I read somewhere many years ago that snow tires should have lots of paths across the tread but not too big of openings in the tread, like bar tires would have. Bar tires in snow will tend to dig out the snow until you are bottomed out, while turfs will pack it down and crawl over it with the little grips provided by the tread.

Hope this helps. :)

I use both turfs and bar tires on my 1845, single size 26-12-12. I think turfs are probably a little better in most conditions other than mud, and certainly leave fewer marks on turf. I have had flats in both types. The turfs seem to puncture a little more easily, but the bar tires will roll off the rims more easily in really rough going (dropping in trail washouts, etc.) For punctures, I find Gempler's bulletproof sealant a bit better than slime, but more expensive. For the rolloffs, I know that higher air pressure would cure the problem, but I've been a bit lax in checking it. I just had tubes put in two of the bar tires. I will put in the sealant and try them at the low pressures I like for mowing.
I am sure that installing skid steer type tires would make them less prone to flats, but would beat up the machine and operator. I'll leave mine fairly soft and put up with an occasional flat. Often I have bars on one end and turfs on the other.

I also recommend the gemplers bulletproof....haven't had a flat since putting it in 1 1/2 years ago and as you can see I'm a little rough on tires:rolleyes:

Add another vote for Gempler's Bulletproof. I added it to my turf tires over two years ago. Yes, it's expensive. I'd like to say I haven't had a flat since but that isn't exactly accurate:

I do much work with brush, manzanita in particular. The stumps are sharp and hard. One cut a sidewall although I didn't notice. The next morning the tire was flat. I aired it up and could see the "wet" spot on the sidewall from the sealer. But it didn't go flat again for about a year. I aired it up again and it is still holding air just fine, and that had to have been 6 months ago or longer.

So that's the only flat I've gotten since adding the sealer and have only had to add air twice in two years.

I'm NOT COUNTING the flat I (and most of us) got when the left inner tire stem was ripped because of accumulating clippings from mowing. I removed the rubber stem and installed a metal stem BACKWARDS. No problem since.

Thanks everyone.

Over the weekend a good buddy of mine let me use his tire machine. We took the two with the slow leaks off the rims.

I had switched to 10 ply (8 ply sides) ditchwitch tires...so I was dissapointed when they went flat.

After getting them off th rims, we saw that the tire shop didn't clean the rims at all, didn't even look like they used any lube to set them! After remounting them they seem to be holding up.

I'll get the names of the tires and pictures when I can.
