Hi all, anyone here ever used 4 link ladder chains on larger turf tires then went to 2 link on the turfs (for a smoother ride) ? They really shake the crap out of everything on ice with the 4 link. The reason im asking as im thinking of buying another set of 4 link ladders (cheaper then buying just crossers???) , removing the crossers and adding to my existing chains.BUT will my ride be smoother or will there still be some shake? Any honest advise is appreciated, thanks ray

Hello Rayclar,

The tire size does not matter you will get the thump thump thump on the 4 link chains too.

Your ride will be smoother with the two link chains on a larger turf tire on ice or asphault.

You will be better off selling the chains you have and buying the new 2 link chains rather than making up a new set from a second set of chains- the cross number of connectors and the chain breaking/mending/splicing tool is all most ninety dollars plus freight or more.

thats not a problem i have the splicing tool already, i had a skidder for thirty years so working on chains in no big deal, in fact i had a smoother ride on my skidder with big o ring chains then i do with my tractor with 4 link ladder chains???

mine are rough but im just adding an extra cross link once i get more connectors(im 6 short). I dont worry about the ride to much as im not on my tractor for 10 hours a day, if i was on it more then i would change them sooner but im not.

I run double ring chains on ford tractors. On 4link spaceing they bounce all over the place, on 2link spacing they are smoother than ladder chains.
Also much better traction as the tire doesn't have to climb up onto the chain.

The reason your skidder had a better ride on the floating or tight dozer chains was because there is always chain touching the ground...

one thing I would keep in mind if you buy a second set of chains just for the cross rails is this... chances are you will be buying a set of chinese made chains and when you "open" up the hooks to take the rails off, there is a 50/50 chance of the hooks breaking.... I tell you this from experience as I manufacture snow chains to be sold as well as repair customers chains....

We use Norwegian chain (Trygg, Tellefsdal), various chinese and north american products... most of the online places sell chinese... your better off buying new rails unless you already have some spare hooks laying around

I run 2-link on my garden tractor all year around and don't notice any major thumping. I also run 2-links on the front of my Kubota L and the bumping is minimal. I have no experience with chains on the rear of the big one.
