What is the process by which a fescue hay field can be turned into lawn?

Also, what is the best time of year to undertake this?

Thanks.

I'd get the soil tested 1st.So you could add what ever you need to before you seed. There usully about $8 It can be a big help.Especially if you need to spread lime.Lime can take a few months just to start to break down and raise the ph level if it's needed. My property had an overal ph level of 5.4 very acidic. Most grasses like 6.4 to 7.Plus the tester recommeded X amount of nitrogen and other basic components per lb per acre.I had to have 2.5tons of lime per acre to my 6 of 8 acres.to get from the 5.4 to 6.4ph level.I paid $350 to have the local co-op to spread it.the folks that tested our soil also recommeded types of grass best for our soil and climate.Picked up the test kit at the loacal land office.
My front 2 acres (spilt in half by the drive)has a mix right now of weeds,Johnsons grass(hay) Some type of creeping burmuda(forget its name) and 3pallets 1500sqft of Tiffany Burmuda sod we put down right in front of the house to instantly stop the mud from being tracked in.We started this spring and were fortunate.it rained enough that we barely had to water the sod.We keep it cut about 3" and the sod and creeping burmuda are slowly choking out the weeds.Had 1acer of weeds directly in front of the house to start and is now 1/3 or more grass .We will continue to seed and sod as the wallet will allow.SOme folks say do it during the fall so you don't have to water so much.I've had better luck with mid to late spring.Plus if you have a warm dry fall you may have to water just as much.Guess it depends on what part of the country you live in.If you are lucky enough to have a tilller enjoy.I used the scarsfiers on the box blade to break up the soil.Making passes in several directions.the smoothing with the boxlade.Spread the seed covered it with straw.Kept it wet for to week via rain or hose.Same with the sod.If you dicide to lay sod I bought it at almost half the price of Home depot or nurseries by going to the sod farm by the pallet.$55 compared to $100 a pallet.Just know it weighs 2800lbs per pallet. Also had to drive an hr one way to get.We plan to continue laying sod right in front of the house and seeding the rest over time. That wallet again/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif.

Good luck
