:D

Lost a ewe this winter and things are thawed enough to bury her. Seeing as the old Woods hoe won't fit on my new Cabota, I had to borrow a buddy's Cat 416.

In exchange, I get to figger out why the Cat ain't charging...

I would look at belt tension, first. Then go to the generator/alternator, second. Thirdly I think I would look at the batteries and see of they are full of juice/electrolyte. After that I would raise my hands up to shoulder height from my sides and say, 'beats me'.

Belt was loose, but tightening it didn't fix the problem. Cleaned all the connections, still no joy.

Took the alternator off and dropped it off to be tested/repaired.

I'll try to remember to let ya know what happened.

My Ford 1210 wasn't charging. I discovered a dirty plug connection, cleaned it and all is well.

'twas the regulator module on the alternator. He popped a fresh set of bearings in it while he had it apart.

$93.53, parts and labor.

I shudder to think what Cat would've charged for a new alternator.

The picture in the first post is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the movie "Twins" with Danny DiVito and Arnold Schwartzenegger.

I get it now, thanks. My phone wouldn't open the photo - makes sense now on the bigger screen!

That is good news and a cheap rental to boot! The neighbour will want to lend you his stuff more often.

I have a pretty good relationship with Dale. He's a builder with a pretty good sized crew and busier than a one-armed paper hanger. Seeing as it was dead before I borrowed it, he'll pay for the rebuild, I'll throw in my time to diagnose, remove and replace.

Neither he nor his crew is known for taking care of the equipment so I fix his tools, do a little repair welding for him and generally keep things going. In return, I get to use whatever I need as long as it isn't needed on the job. Works out great for both of us and he knows I'll return anything I borrow in as good as, or often better than the condition I borrowed it in.
