Do twisters hit other countries?

I'm curious about twisters in other parts of the world. The US has Tornadoe Alley, in the midwest. I have seen PBS shows about tornadoes, and have seen them in the news. But, I have never heard of them happening other places. I can't imagine the US is the only place they happen.

TORRO -- the Tornado and Storm Research organization -- where they claim the United Kingdom "has the highest frequency of reported tornadoes per unit area in the world."

Wow! With the UK's seemingly mild climate, I wouldn't think they would have any tornadoes. I read somewhere that as a whole the U.S. has the most severe weather in the world.

If you ever get a chance to watch the discovery channel they frequently have shows on tornados. One thing that they recently found out is that one side of the funnel is much more powerful than the other. This accounts for more damage on one side of the tornado than the other.

Did anyone see that film of the FLAX factory in Canada that stated out as a little fire and ended up as a flaming tornado? They had several million tons of bailed flax out in storage yards. A small fire started and someone had a video camera. As the fire started getting bigger the rising heat sucked in more air and everything started to rotate. It made a huge tornado of fire that was strong enough to toss around vehicles. Killed one person that was thrown from a pickup truck that it sucked in. It was one of the most incredible things I have ever seen on TV.

Interesting! I knew we couldn't be the only ones with Tornadoes, but I just never heard about them like we do fires, earthquakes, ect.

I could see that be possible. You've got extreme heat in Arizona and Death Valley. You've got extreme cold in Alaska and parts of the upper 48. You've got moonsoon and huricanes in Hawaii and Florida. It is entirely possible that the US runs the whole gamet of weather.

You would think some of the formers Soviet Union, or Chian would have most extremes too though.

Re: Do twisters hit other countries?

We actually had a twister here in Edmonton a number of years back. It was a biggie and caused a lot of damage. Last year or the year before there were a couple in central Alberta that killed a number of folks. The main one basically destroyed a campground. Not a lot of safe places to go in a fifth wheel holiday trailer!!!
