TYM 273
Hi

My sad neglected 13 or 14 year old TYM273 overheated and I found I had to add a bit under a gallon of 50/50 coolant which means it was very low. I don't see any radiator leaks and I'd assume if there were a leak I'd have had to add 1.5 gallons - maybe not. Anyway after adding the coolant the temp gauge is in the middle and no longer showing high but the engine is blowing smoke. Reading some other posts here I'm wondering if the engine could've been damaged by the overheating. I don't think I ran it for long in that condition.

Are you getting water in your oil, or oil in your water. Head gasket.

I had a 273 for 10 years. It was a great little tractor. The few times it overheated was caused by screen getting stopped up while bushhoging tall weeds. It would loose power while it was overheating, but would run normal after I let it cool back down. Never smoked.

What color is the smoke? Check the oil and see what color it is. If it is milky you probably have a bad head gasket.

Smoke is blackish - doesn't happen until tractor has been running for 10 mins.. then smoke is billowing from all over. Engine oil is normal color

It's a dozen years old and more now and needs a lot of maintenance. Maybe I should just sell it!

On that subject I can't find anything like a 15 yr old TYM273 with a FEL out there for sale, to give me an idea as to what kind of money it's worth spending on fixing it up, if worse comes to worst.. anyone have any ideas? It does need a big service including replacing boots on the wheels, apart from what it will take to fix the immediate problem. I seem to recall some hefty bills taking it in for maintenance in the past ...

Black smoke sounds like a stuck injector. If it is not overheating when its smoking. I sold mine mine that had 890 hours on it for $4500. I had repaired about everything that had broken. New drive shaft, welded chassis, repaired wiring harness. I had added a sub frame to stop the chassis from twisting. It did have a broken grill and headlight when I sold it.

Thanks Bud, sounds like yours was in much better shape than mine. Any idea how hard of a job it is to replace that (if it is a stuck injector)?

With the tractor running loosen up one injector line at the time. If you get to open one and it stops smoking then that injector is bad. Yes fuel will run out on top of the engine while you have the line loose but it won't hurt anything.

Thanks again Bud.
Good info. I'll try to find someone who can do it for me without taking it in to a dealer.
