Thanks again Bud.
Good info. I'll try to find someone who can do it for me without taking it in to a dealer.

I am getting a replacement radiator thermostat from Steve at Valley View Tractor & Equipment, Inc.
He was recommended to me by someone on this forum years ago and they have been great at getting and sending TYM Parts and also giving some advice. Apparently TYM have never sold an injector as a part. I'm just getting the radiator thermostat in case that is the problem although when it's billowing out gray smoke after running 10 mins the temp needle is in the middle

Which engine do you have?
You can source parts by engine make/ model

Thanks Ken. Seems head gasket might be leaking coolant into the fuel - hence the white smoke after running for 10 mins
Local mechanic said to try 'head gasket in a bottle' from local NAPA parts..

Black smoke sounds like a stuck injector. If it is not overheating when its smoking. I sold mine mine that had 890 hours on it for $4500. I had repaired about everything that had broken. New drive shaft, welded chassis, repaired wiring harness. I had added a sub frame to stop the chassis from twisting. It did have a broken grill and headlight when I sold it.

Seems this is what was happening. Steve at Valley Tractor said try Stanadyne in liberal doses to free up anything stuck. I did that and so far so good. This forum is great and when i get rid of the tractor I'll miss it. At age 72 I think my tractor days are almost over. Actually fwiw while the TYM273 has been great I never felt too safe on it - I am 6'4" and it was never easy climbing into it, felt very cramped, and not comfortable with where the steering wheel was positioned etc. Then always felt I was raising the center of gravity too much on an incline. Probably paranoia the last part.

Also dealers not so close..

I think I'm almost at end of life for the TYM273 - not sure yet. it's 18 yrs old, been driven hard and has had minimal care and attention. After Stanadyne use, it can be driven without smoke, but I think (not sure yet) that it might be using too much radiator water. And a faint smell of residual antifreeze? So my question is, can it be driven for the last hours or days of its life with constant addition of water after cooling off? maybe every 20 mins - I guess I'd have to keep an eye on the thermometer.. inconvenient but no way am I replacing the head gasket if needed. I might try liquid head gasket stuff..

Got to say what a great forum this is..I'm appreciative of the courtesy and patience for a non hands-on operator over the years..

Sort of thing that makes America great..

Change the headgasket if defective, keep it going. Still cheaper than a new tractor.

I agree with TYM put a head gasket on it , it has a mitsubishi S3L2 engine and that is a good engine

Saga continues. Wasn't using any water so I guess Stanadyne cleared the problem (stuck injector probably) and I was obsessing about the smell of antifreeze..
