My instruction manual for the FEL asks to use a high pressure molybdenum type grease.

I was wondering if ya'll used actual Kubota grease which has molybdenum.

Wally World sells a high pressure type grease, but I don't know if it has molybdenum in it. It does list lithium, but doesn't indicate moly. It's by Super Tech.
I use the cheap Super Tech general purpose lithium grease for the Hog.

Thanks for yall's help.

I read my FEL owners manual but never paid any attention to the grease type. I was not aware of high pressure grease. Ive been using hightemp red grease. No I wonder if I should switch to the high pressure stuff.

I use the el cheapo black grease in cartridges from Tractor Supply for the FEL. Doesn't seem to me that it makes a whole lot of difference for an FEL since you're just greasing pivot points, not high speed rotary parts.

For rotating parts like the PTO shaft, I use the cheap red grease in cans from TSC.

What's important, IMHO, is that you keep your grease gun/grease bucket handy loaded with your favorite lubricant AND have a reasonable lubrication schedule and stick to it.

My grandfather was a blacksmith in central Wisconsin and he would tell me that he made good money repairing stuff from farmers who didn't lubricate their equipment properly.

20 years ago I worked as a designer on aircraft controls & gearing. Have long since lost my mind, moved to Bubbaland and bought a 'Bota....

Sherman, set the wayback machine for 1987 -- Moly is a lamellar semi-solid (like graphite). Little chunks in suspension with real slippery layers.

We used moly grease only when something was going to be very hot or very wet. It is not all that great operating pressure-wise. I think most high-end grease is "extreme" pressure.

The stuff is ideal for pin joints if they get wet a lot though. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I do the same as others have posted. I grease habitually and very frequently (2-3 hrs digging), not worried about the grease itself even though I really flog my BX. It lives in a barn (no rain) and drips big greasy globs everywhere it goes.

Hey, I think I can literally hear dry or dirty pin joints, esp. on FEL. Louder than the hydraulic hissss, which just a hint of a crackling or scraping sound. Goes away immediately with greasing. Anybody else notice that? Seriously doubt I have fried a bushing, as it occurs infrequently at random locations.

Last weekend I was at my local rental place getting a propane tank filled and we got into a discussion about grease. They said that they only use high pressure or extreem pressure grease. They told me they can put regular grease in an excavator and send it out on a day job and when it gets back all the grease is squeezed out of the pivots. They can put the ep moly in and send it out on a week long job and the grease will still be in there working. The bossman said that the good stuff is four times more expensive but it more than pays for itself in reduced maintenance costs. I also got the dissertation on the cheap imported diamond blades but that's a story for another post.

The grease I bought at tractor supply says right on the tube
Extreem pressure moly.

I like the Mystik brand from tractor supply. I believe it is an extreme pressure grease and its fairly inexpensive.

Moly, being more expensive, has always led me to believe that it should be used in more severe applications. Forty years of repairing Cat equipment has shown me time and time again that it is not the type of grease nor the quantity of grease that one uses, but the frequency of application that is important. If the pin/bearing (whatever) joint is loose, it is too late for effective lubrication. Joints/connections without much play should be greased at REGULARLY scheduled intervals. Moly additives will usually prolong its life.
