Have an old "Modern" Highway Special 7' shredder thats been sitting out for about 2 years. Need to get it going again but can't remember what type of oil dad used to use in it. Is it plain 90 weight oil in the housing?

Yeah - gear lube. Either 80w90, straight 90 or 80w140.

You should dump and rinse the gear box to get out any water. Have seen where folks fill with diesel and some of the diesel additive that gets water out. Dump, dry then fill with the viscosity of choice.

I just bought a 6' Rhino rotary cutter (i.e. shredder), and it calls for Gear Grease (like 140w), not gear oil
weird, but true.
Tractor dealer had lots (NH branded, but i'm sure they all have it)

If it calls for 140W then it's a gear oil. Grease viscosity clasification is given as NGLI # 0000 through 10 with NGLI# 2 being the most common. For a gear case it is normal practice to use a NGLI # 00 grease as it is a semi-fluid.

I admit I wasn't paying a whole ton of attention and the number could be wrong
but the bottle definately said "gear grease"

I checked the oil level in the gearboxes in my Rhino cutter and they were a little tad low. So I got some gear oil, 90W I think. The stuff that was already in there on the dipstick looked like semisolid vaseline, not like the gear oil I had. I went ahead and topped it off with the gear oil I had. Should I have used NLGI#00 grease instead? Did I do a bad thing by putting in the gear oil on top of what was already in there?

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but was just wondering.

I doubt it will hurt anything. One of the reasons they use a NGLI# 00 in many gear box's is to prevent oil leakage. The semi-fluid characteristics of the grease does not leak out as easily as oil does. I sell a lot of NGLI# 00 grease to golf courses to use in their gang reel mower gear box's. They originally came filled with 140W gear oil but they prefer the grease as it does not leak out all over their expensive grass and cause little brown spot's.

Where can you find NLGI 00 grease? I have done a quick look-around on the internet and it seems to be rather hard to find at the regular box stores, tractor supply co., southern states, etc. I did find some AMsoil synthetic NLGI 00 grease at over $300.00!!
