Anyone using U-verse internet service? What do you think of it?

My remote corner of St. Tammany Parish does not have cable or dsl available. So - - right now it's dial-up or satellite, with the latter being only marginally better than dial-up. There was an aritcle in our paper a couple of days ago that ATT wants to roll out U-verse to all the unincorporated areas of the Parish, but there were objections on the planning commission that the utility boxes required would be unsightly. Geez, anyone who raises that complaint must already have high speed internet service.

I hope they get the OK & get it working soon!

I do not use it. However if you have cellular service (Verizon in my case) you can get a personal WiFi connection (allows 5 parties) for the price of a satellite connection. Works perfectly anywhere you can get a cellular signal.

Look on Verizon's site for the MiFi. And that can go anywhere with you. The 5 gig monthly allowance is plenty. I have never exceeded it as a moderate to heavy user (streaming online school classes).

There are other gadgets as well but this one is good for the household with 5 connections at one time.

Satellite is very slow to upload and not a lot faster on downs. Just sayin'.

My dad lives in a city where U-Verse is available. It's designed as a bundled service which gives you phone, internet, and TV service all through AT&T. He's happy with the service, but the internet connection from it is no different than regular DSL or cable modem service. One downside is that your phone won't work without power any longer if you switch it to U-Verse phone service. I think they do provide a battery backup, but it only lasts a short while.

Well, cfabe, that bundled service sounds great. Since I can't get dsl or cable currently it sounds like a big improvement. Now, all they need to do is do it.

My cell phone signal is not sufficient to get internet that way - - people keep recommending it but tht's not an option either.

Thanks,

Jack

If you have 2 bars of signal, you can buy an antenna and amplifier for your house to boost the signal. Works great for me.

Ken,
What kind of boost are you using? I've been looking into these but they are expensive and seem to be a hit and miss thing.
My biggest problem is that we seem to have dead spots in our house. I can have 5 bars in one spot but if I move a foot I will go down to nothing and drop a call. It's very strange and aggravating.

Sweet, that's actually the one I've been looking at. Glad to hear it works good for you.
Thanks!

The antenna and the transmitter have to be a minimum distance apart from each other (15' maybe?). You can also get directional antenna's. Mine worked well enough putting the antenna in the attic, otherwise i would have put it outside.
