Kubota M7040 cab/hyd shuttle - current, Kubota L3400 - traded
I decided to try my old hydraulic top link from my L3400 on the new tractor. When I got to putting the hose on the couplers, I was surprised to see no spring loaded collar to push back to get the couplers on or release the couplers.

The manual says just to push the hose in and ensure it is locked and then shut the tractor off, make sure the load is off the lines and just pull it straight out.

This just sounds too strange. Can someone enlighten me on the mechanism that keeps the male hydraulic coupler attached and locked onto the female part? My hoses have 3/8" male Pioneer style couplers. Do I need some special sort of male coupler on my hoses?

Nope. Just push them in. They do have to be straight, and no pressure does help a great deal. If they pop out, you didn't have them pushed in far enough. All of my jd's are like that. I have a few old tractors with the other couplers, and the same hoses on different implements hook right up to either style.

For how it works... I cant help with that.

You push them in - some can be harder to engage than others.

You pull them out - some can be harder to disengage than others.

They are not like quick connect air fittings or water hose fittings.

Also to be noted, it will take a pretty hard push or pull to attach/remove them. In all honesty this is my least favorite type of coupler but it seems like this is what all the mfg's are moving to. The type with the collar are easier to work with provided they don't have any pressure on them.

The best hydraulic couplers I have ever seen are the ones that Deere used for many years with the lever that you move that actually forces the hose out of the coupling. When you move the lever the other way it pulls the hose in and locks it in. We have a 2550 JD with this type of coupler and it is a dream to use. Not sure why that style has gone by the wayside.
