I have a John Deere 250 Skid. Did seals on the right tilt cylinder a few weeks ago. had to really drive it hard but was able to get the gland ring in enough to insert filler and pull out rod. Now the left tilt cylinder is leaking a bit and want to do same to that one. Cannot drive the gland ring in more than about 1/4" bringing it just below the cylinder walls. Need to get it in another 3/4" at least to fill groove so internal snap ring can slip out. Suspect there may be some rust in the internal cylinder wall causing the internal snap ring to hang up rather than compress and be driven into cylinder. Any ideas on that to do to drive this gland ring in further. External snap ring is off and if I use hydraulics to shove rod back out, it doesn't come out quite far enough to get the external snap ring back on and use the unit with it leaking. What happens if I run the bucket with the external snap ring removed?

You have a burr, part inside the cyl tube and part on the gland head where the lock ring groove is. You will have to get some heat and get rough with it pushing in.

Just an update to close my post. I wound up rotating the gland ring with a pipe wrench and retried driving it in. After trying a couple small rotations and re-driving attempts, I was successful driving the gland ring in past the groove. Did not apply any heat.
