Good Evening Everyone,
I am JJ Knight. I am new to the Forum and happy to be a new member.
I happen to have a 1979 Case 580C, whose four speed transmission is in great condition, except for not being able to shift from any gear to any gear. It just so happens that the shifter itself seems to not be attached to anything or what it is suppose to be attached to. It seems as though it is free as a bird flying around in the gear box housing. It just so happens that I lost control of the machine due to two things. One being, trying to shift from second gear to first while going up hill. When trying to shift from second to first, please keep in mind that I am going up hill, big mistake !!! Two, disengaging the clutch and taking the transmission out of second....now in neutral and not being able to get it into first. Now, not realizing that I have no clutch OR BRAKES at this time....lost all brake fluid. At this time I am trying to get it into any gear.....it never did happen. What did happen though, was that the only way I could stop the tractor was by lowering the backhoe and frontend loader. From that point on my shift lever (4 gear plus reverse transmission) just moves freely around in the box without (so it seems) being attached to any mechanism inside. I have been working on removing the floor plate to gain access to the transmission, in an effort to remove the top of the transmission and the shifter. I am having a problem removing the floor plate. The bolts are all rusted and do not want to cooperate with me. I've tried everything to get the bolts out. I may need to chisel or grind them off. Any thoughts on what could be the problem within the transmission itself. I can only guess that by my trying to force the shifter into gear something either broke or disconnected. I'm trying to get an idea as to what may be the problem before I get into the box to assess the damage. I hope to hear from someone who may have had a similar problem. Thanking you in advance.
