What goes in the hole in the dash?
Also, what model is the International? I almost pulled the trigger on a 856, years ago.

Now that you have decided to trailer tractor home if it were mine this is what I would do before starting it. I have purchased several used ones at auction and have done the same thing except some of what I would do to the 4230 is based on the fact it has been sitting for years.

Remove ALL sheet metal. Hood, screens, panels in the cab. All of them

Got to town with the air compressor and blow everything out

Drain hydraulic and engine oil and fill with new.

I might would drain diesel out just for the fact it has been sitting

Replace all filters. Engine, both air, hydraulic, fuel.

They most likely need replaced. Replace all battery cable, clean up the grounds. If it 2 - 6 volts for a 12 volt system. Now is the time to change it. I have yet to do that to any of mine.

New batteries. Don't cheap out.

If your not in a hurry, now is the time to slide out hydraulic oil cooler and give it and radiator a good cleaning. Most likely at some point in its life a hose came off or blew out around the hydraulic pump and coated EVERYTHING. And probably never received a good and through cleaning.

Take the time look over wires, hydraulic hoses, and anything else that will be hidden when sheet metal goes back on.

The day you decide to turn the key.

I know you said it's warm where you live but trust me.

Plug in the block heater, hopefully it still works. I would leave it plugged in for at least 6 hours. It will warm up all the fluids in the tractor a lot more than 80/90 ambient temperatures will and just make it that much easier to start.

Put a battery charger on at the starter, Very important if you leave this tractor with 2 - 6volts wired in series. Put charger on high. unplug the block heater and...

if all goes well she will fire right up.

Some pictures of the 4430 I purchased at an auction that I have used for the pictures.

What it looked like when I inspected it weeks before the auction

Bought it and drove it 6 hours home in unknown conditions. Topped off fluids and hopped for the best. Only issue was lost all electrical half way home and knew if I stalled it was in trouble. Turned out all it was, was a broken wire at the alternator. This is why you look stuff over and I wish I had removed air cover and looked at the filter. Why or how it was installed this way is beyond me. Just lazy.

Under the orange is the new washer. If you look closely in the previous picture you can see a kernel of corn.

Conway or Loretta is fine with me. Lots of this new fangled country "music" is just rap to me.

I was just gonna remove the interior, scrub it all and paint it, but .......Now, whatever happens in the cab is your fault. After your post, I found this website... Complete Cab Kit for John Deere Early 30 Series 4030 4230 4430 4630 Again, it's all your fault, Dusty3030.(y)
The cab kits do make an older tractor much nicer to be in, quieter and more comfortable.

And I'll sure agree with you music choices, Our vehicles that have SiriusXM are on Willies Road house almost all the time. I have looked at new stereos for the tractors with XM radio but I don't want another subscription I have looked at the various other options that would plug into an auxiliary port or bluetooth into if they had that capabilities. I will stream it at times on my phone. But my tractor hours are much less these days then they used to be so it's not really worth it.

I plan on pulling the whole interior and clean/paint or replace. While out, everything will get a rodent eaten wire inspection. Didn't think about pulling all the tin, but it is a sound idea. Back flushing the oil cooler is a great idea. Cleaning out the radiator is good idea also.
I have planned on all new filters and fluids. This is standard on any used machine I buy.

What freon was used in it and what do you use today?

I had my welding shop weld in a tube for a huge D ring to hook the winch hook to.

I don't weld anything that a failure can cause injury. I trade them welding for 8 foot 4x4s.
My cousin said his SIL might be able to bring his skid steer to help in moving and loading.

I would expect it used R12. It can be converted over to 134 after flushing the system and compressor, changing the oil and replacing the receiver/dryer.
Depending upon what you find as you are cleaning here up and working on cab and ducting you may end up with a major rebuild on the system including a new compressor and lines to and from the the cabs evaporator.
If somehow the system is tight and holding pressure I wouldn't be afraid of topping off with R290.

An example of how plugged the radiator and the oil cooler can get. The 4040 is original to the farm. Growing up with it it always ran in a certain temperature range even not doing anything. It was normal, not hot. After I quit farming went to work in a factory, built a shop and had money and little more time I started to take a different approach on maintenance. And one of the things I did was slide cooler out and give a good intensive cleaning and to say it was plugged was an understatement. Straightened some fins. I had never seen that tractor run so cool. No load and barely came off cold and when under load all day stayed well below where it normally ran. It was worth the effort.

I'll get a picture. Inside the screen above the hydraulic pump there are many connections known for failing and blowing oil around.

As for the air condition part. I have lots of work to do yet under the cab. It doesn't even open properly. Rusted hinges. I'll probably get a new top someday. as for now I open the windows for my air conditioning and run the fan. I'm third owner. The 2nd owners said it didn't work when they got it. Which I'm guessing was the late 80's early 90's. Someday maybe but like stated above I'm sure it is a full rebuild at this point $$$

JD 4430 came from factory with R12 & probably has be changed to R134A. What type fittings for attaching gauges are on manifold at compressor?
