Rotary Cutter Unidentified tail wheel needs a hub & axle

The race of the bearing is not part of the hub. A tapered bearing is all that is needed. Yellow pages or find a friend who works maintance. It is alot easier after you've done one.

A industrial bearing supply house should be able to help you. Do you have a real machine shop nearby? Anyone that can use a set of veneer calipers should be able to identify some bearings for you and if no one will help you buy yourself some cheap Harbor Freight digital calipers start measuring your hub and axle and go online on one of the bearing sites and you'll find the bearing numbers you need. bjr

No, I am in St. Louis, Missouri. I tried the local Bucheits and Orschlens and could not find anything that would help. I am not sure how strong the yoke would be after drilling it for a 1 inch axle.

We have a hub for $44. It has the 3/4 hole for the axle bolt. Toll Free 1-866-528-3323 Ken Sweet

I was afraid of getting in over my head trying to rebuild the hub so I went for the quick and easy bolt on part. I know my Dad would say "Nobody fixes things anymore." I called the Bush Hog people and they were very helpful. I gave them bolt spacing they found a fit. Unfortunately I was out of town and paid more than the Ken Sweet price but at least I should be mowing this week.
Here is a photo of the rotary cutter. It would be nice to know the brand or manufacturer for future reference. Thanks to all for the help.

what is the width of it? is it a 5 foot? 6 foot deck? others around bush hogs more often, more likely take a good guess on size. but not I.

is that oringal paint on it?

check the gear box on the bush hog. there should be a part number. that last few bush hogs gear boxes i have seen. all had model numbers on the gear box above the deck. and instead of a "tag" pin on. the numbers were punched / placed in during casting the outer gear box.

the gear box might be used on multi things, i honestly do not know, but it might help slime down your choices of what you have.

At first glance, I see a lot of similarties to the sunshine by modern brand.

I had one last year and fixed it up and re-sold it. Unfortunatally I cant find any pics of it. But the Gear-box and tail-wheel look pretty similar.

I did a search here and found this http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachments/152742-5-rotary-cutter-cheap.html

Its a little different, but close enough I'd say that it is probabally a modern brand?? But maybe not the exact model.

Yes LD1, I see what you are saying. Here is a close-up of the gear box.

It looks like a match except mine has a whole bunch of green paint. It was yellow at one point. The fellow I got it from said it didn't get much maintenance but he did sharpen the blades right before he got drafted and sent to Vietnam. I will see what I can find about Modern Ag.

did the stamped plate that would have manufacture / model info on it. get flipped upside down when unit was painted by previous owner?

plate = directly behind gear box. and looks to have a couple rivets holding it in place. i guess the metal plate behind gear box could be used to access a bolt or something on blades. but to me that just seams strange, from all the bush hogs i have seen. and reason why i am wondering if the plate got flipped upside down when it was repainted.

===============

if paint and stuff is chipped of the stamped plate. use a children technique to copy stuff. place a piece of paper over the plate. then rub edge of a pencil lead back and forth over the paper / stamped plate. it should help bring out what is there so it is easier to see / read.
