Yeah. We call them Hummer recovery vehicles. Awsome machines. You can get a decent used one that has been brought over from Europe for under 10,000. Go to yahoo and do a search on them.. Be prepared to be amazed.

Do you know which model he got? I've seen them with a 3pt hitch on the front and back. They make great off road campers too.

A most impressive machine. I watched several of these at work on steep slopes when I was in Austria and Germany. This summer an older one was parked at a supermarket near where I work in Vermont. The driver happen to be just returning from the store as I inspected his rig and I talked with him for a while.

Seems there is a man in Texas, or somewhere around there who buys used units from Europe, rebuilds them and sells them that is where this guy got his.

I guess you can call it a tractor you can drive to town. I don't think the over the road speed approaches highway speed. He told me in the lowest gear the speed was measured in feet per minute, a turtle could walk faster. The diesel engine is pretty easy on fuel, so he says.

I don't think my wife would like to drive this back and forth to the supermarket.

History of Unimog

March 1957, Nebraska Tractor Test # 607, tested one of the first truck-tractors: Mercedes-Benz Unimog 30 Diesel. The current design has remained basically the same since the late 1940’s…a very unique vehicle to say the least…

There are so many models over the years that it is amazing.. They have several that will run highway speeds, but the short ones will not. Read somewhere that the short ones are un stable at high speed, and they are geared for off road anyway. I have a bunch of links in my favorites at work. I'll post them sometime this week during a lunch hour.

Hi ya
i saw a thing on TV years ago bout them i think the NZ army had just got them from what i can recall the gear box was 6 or 8 speed but had a lockup kinda deal the gears worked in a H pattern ie 1,2,3,4 only in 4 would 5,6 unlock and then 6 unlocked 7,8 same deal going back down 5 unlocked 4,3 and 3 unlocked 2,1 also had a time delay so ya could not drop down gears fast can not recall why tho ...there were 21 for sale a few months ago in NZ but i did not see what they sold for we had just got a big trailer and thinking bout it a unimog may have been a better deal
i think they may be pricey to fix tho
catch ya
