uninstal wxp sp3?

went to install office 2010 on the wifes computer ( xp box.. had sp2 ).. office wanted sp3... installed sp3 using windows update. went fine.. no issues popped up.. it said it needed to reboot. agter reboot, it bluescreens and restarts wight after the splash screen now.

I CAN get it to come up in safe mode.

is there a way to ditch the sp3? and go back to the way it was before the 'ahem' upgrade?

ok.. trying system restore.. looks like there is a checkpoint PRIOR to the instalation of sp3 that was automatically generated.

As you've found there are issues doing SP3 via windows update,

Instead download the self installing version of the SP3, then use Nlite to slipstream it into your version of SP2 and do a reinstall using the new slip-streamed disc.

whew... I've never had good experiences with windows restore programs.. but, knock on wood.. this time it worked.

the computer booted back up as sp2, and is running fine... thank goodness.

will now worry about getting the files updated that office 10 wants...

weird.. she has a lil laptop and desktop.. laptop went to sp3 and the desktop.. so she could do office on both... the laptop had about 5 different errors on the sp3 install... yet.. after reboot.. it was fine.

the desktop breezed thru the install.. and then bluescreened on the rebot.

go figure..

just glad to be up and running. was a bad day for computers for me.

the video card in my pc died.. it was a nvidia 7600.. capacitors blew on it.. video died.. i pulled it from the system and let the cheesy onboard SiS video take over.. slow as molasis on a cold day... old machine is agp8x.. so upgrade options were limited.. found a used nvidia6200 card up the road.. threw that in.. seems to be fine now... ho-hum..

Windows updates have always been a thrill a minute. Always kept a couple of older computers to find the gotchas. Worst one was a windows 2000 update that blue screened all the SCSI based systems, would have gotten all the engineering stations and servers :confused2: MS came up with a fix about 4 Mos. latter.

yep.. SP3 was not thrilling for that machine... got her back though.. and am just manual installing updates now.. making sure I have a restore point before each update now..

On a side note, there are plenty of viruses, malware, etc... that infect the restore points, so when you restore, you just reinfect the machine. Once you get it built up with all your service packs, updates, etc... its not a bad idea to use a program like Ghost to make a good backup of your drive so you can restore it to that point again in the future without having to download all of the service packs and updates again.
