Anyone have any experience with a Universal 453? (4x4 version think maybe it's called a 453dt)
Going to go look at one for a friend. What's the good\bad\ugly about these tractors?

Thanks, E.

A Fiat built under licence in Romania, unfortunately they started to put in different engines and parts so some are not a pure Fiat.

Very capable, simple tractor, virtually bomb proof. I miss my 445DT which was the perfect size for my holding. 12 years needed only a front prop shaft U/J & a steering joint.
The filters are situated above the starter, so keep that area clear of drips & chaff or it can cause a fire if the starter connections are iffy (which is what did for mine) & I know of one other with a similar fate.

Thanks guys, some good info. We're going to go look at it on Tuesday. I know tractors well in general so at least I can help my friend with general condition etc. He's starting out a new farm and this will be his first tractor to run the place with. I like the fact that it's simple. As long as it can do all the basic tasks he'll be asking that's all that matters.
My only only other concern is apparently the hour meter is broken but supposedly it's around 5000hours. I haven't seen pictures of it so I can't comment if it looks like the tractor has been abused or not. I'm hoping at tractor like this should be good for at least 10,000 hours assuming it's well maintained.

Starter is same as a standard Lucas unit, alternator could be replaced by any, hydraulic pump & power steering pumps are separate units gear driven on the timing cover. Mine had a 12 speed creeper/low/high gearbox, but I believe the 453 has an eight speed & shuttle reverse which would be good. The standard hydraulic control on mine was configured as a diverter: down worked the front loader via it's own set of slice levers; mid position allowed the linkage controls via the usual side lever (position & draft control via a selector lever plus sensitivity control); up position fed the rear quick coupler.
Hand clutch to left of main gearlever for the PTO control (540 only) allowed "feathering " on startup of heavy bushhog rotor to prevent shearpin breakage.
Difflock & 4wd makes it a really good multi purpose tractor IMHO - hope yours meets your expectations:thumbsup:
